Lesson 25 Do the English speak English?

连词

定义：用来连接单词、短语、从句或是句子的词类称为连词；如果被连结的单词、短语、从句或是句子在语法上占同等地位就称之为并列连词（co- ordinate conjunctions）；如果所引导的从句是从属分句（包括名词从句、定语从句、状语从句），而将主句和从句连接起来成为一个复合句，则称之为从属连词（sub-ordinate conjunctions）。

The railway station was big, black and dark.——and是并列连词
I don’t think (that) he will come.——that是从属连词


我们这课的就是讲解并列连词和并列句的。

a. 新概念第二册第一单元（1－24课）其重点就在简单句上。通常，简单句中的词序如下：

(Time)/Subject/Verb/Object/Manner/Place/(Time)

The children asked questions continuously in class this morning.

b. 从第二单元开始，也就是从第25课开始，我们要在简单句上更上一层楼，开始学习将各类简单句合并为并列句（compound statements）。

我们是使用诸如“and, but, so, either...or, neither...nor...”等连词将简单句连为并列句。

Either是表示“两者选一”的概念。比如：either…or…是表示“或者…或者…”的意思。
Neither是表示“两者都不”的概念，也就是都否定了。Neither…nor…是“既不…也不…”的意思。

Either和neither在英国英语和美国英语中不同的发音。

i.注意：当一个并列句的两个部分由连词and或but连接时，它们共享一个主语，不必重复主语。例如：

He finished lunch and went into the garden.
You must wash the dishes and sweep the floor.

ii.连词“both...and...; either...or...; neither...nor...; not only...but also...”能够用来连接两个主语、两个宾语、两个谓语动词和两个副词等。但是无论是哪个连词，所连接的前后两部分的成分必须一致。

以上的这些连词“both...and...; either...or...; neither...nor...; not only...but also...”可以说都是书面用语，在口语中很少这么使用，我们往往会采用些更加简单的叙述方式，比如：

He can neither read nor write.（书面语）
He can't read or write.（口语）

You must not only wash the dishes but also sweep the floor.（书面语）
You must wash the dishes and sweep the floor too.（口语）

最后，需要补充给大家的是：当这些连词“either...or...; neither...nor...; not only...but also...”在连接两个主语时，他们后面所跟的动词的数与后者一致。比如：

Either he or I am going to attend the meeting.（或者是他，或者是我将会参加会议。）
Neither Tom and I am going to attend the meeting.（Tom和我都将不参加会议。）
Not only you but also I am wrong.

但是，both…and…是表示“两者都”，是复数的概念。所以后面所跟的动词是复数形式。比如：
Both he and I are teachers.
