conceit

definition定义：

n. 1. An attitude that shows you have too high an opinion of your own abilities or importance. 自负；
2. ( technical) an unusual cleverly-expressed comparison, esp. in poetry, showing fancy rather than imagination. 奇想; 奇喻

Examples：

1. That man is full of conceit.
他十分自负。
2. His writings are full of conceits.
他的作品充满了奇喻。

conceit重音在第二个音节ceit上，而且这里的e发长音[i:]，字母组合ceive以及ceit、ceipt中e发长音[i:]的还有：deceive, conceive, perceive, receive, deceit, receipt.

Conceit来源于拉丁文，与希腊文也有关，原义是“想法”，后逐步演变为某种类别的想法，如例句2中的“别出心裁的文字”，例句1中自负的想法。另一个同源词conceive是“形成想法”的意思，并进一步演进为“形成（其他的东西，如胚胎、萌芽等）”。

另外，魔鬼字典中的解释也颇为有趣。自负(Conceit)
