Iran says a missing nuclear scientist whom it alleges was kidnapped by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency has taken refuge at the Iranian interests section of the Pakistani embassy in Washington.

State media reported that Shahram Amiri was asking for a quick return to Tehran.A Pakistani foreign ministry official said Iranian officials in Washington had told him they were working on arranging Amiri's repatriation to Iran.

Amiri, a nuclear physicist in his 30s, vanished in June 2009. A few months later, Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said investigators had obtained documents that showed what he called "U.S. interference" in his disappearance.

The United States, which has denied kidnapping Amiri, has not commented on the latest developments.
