make do

make do? —你大概以为这里面有个错误，有什么词遗漏了吧!不，绝对没有错。Make do是英语中两个最普通的动词结合在一起构成的一个成语，它的解释是“应付、将就”，后面常可跟上个with或without介词短语，表示“靠……将就一下”，或“没有……也可以凑合”：

I don’t know how they can make do on such a small income.
我不知道他们靠这一点收入怎么过日子。

I’m afraid I’ll have to make do with the coat that is becoming a bit too short for me because mother says we are not so well off this winter.
妈妈说今年冬天我们手头紧，恐怕我只能穿那件已经短小的大衣将就一下了。

Don’t worry! If you don’t have the dictionary I recommend, you can make do without it. The one you are using now is good enough.
