Australia says its Federal Police are investigating the WikiLeaks website and its founder to see if they broke any Australian laws by releasing hundreds of thousands of classified U.S. diplomatic documents.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is an Australian citizen. Australian Attorney-General Robert McClelland said Monday there are "potentially a number of criminal laws" that may have been broken.

But, McClelland said he had no knowledge of reports that the United States has asked Australia to cancel Assange's passport. Assange lives mainly in Europe, traveling from country to country.

McClelland also said he has established a task force to deal with any adverse consequences of leaks related to Australia.

Fewer than 1,000 of the leaked diplomatic cables came from the U.S. embassy in Australia. So far, little has emerged from the leaks that would embarrass the Australian government.
