Rachel: I can’t believe Mark didn’t call. It’s Sunday night, and he didn’t call.
Ross: Bummer.
Rachel: Yeah, right. Look at you, you’re practically giddy.
Ross: No, I’m genuinely sorry the Mark thing didn’t work out. Look, Rach, I want only good things for you.
Monica: Wait a minute, why don’t you just call Mark. I mean, who says you have to sit here and wait for him, you’ve got to make stuff happen.
Ross: But, you, you don’t want to seem too pushy.
Monica: (to Ross) Honey, it’s not pushy, he gave her his home number.
Ross: (to Rachel, as she gets his number) What, he gave you his home number? As in like, to, to his home?
Rachel: Yeah, and you don’t mind if I call, because you only want good things for me.
Ross: That’s right good things, that-that is what I said.

It’s a real bummer. It was a real bummer being ill on holiday.

(Yeah, right. Look at you, you’re practically giddy.)giddy这个词和dizzy一样可以用来表示 “头晕目眩”,但dizzy大多表示一种纯生理的反应,而giddy则有可能是其它因素引起的,如:Sheila felt giddy with excitement.

接下来Monica建议Rachel主动打电话去问问Mark情况,她说:“who says you have to sit here and wait for him, you’ve got to make stuff happen.(谁说你必须坐在这儿等他的电话,你得主动出击)。”听到这儿,Ross又急了,好嘛,Monica居然要Rachel自已送上门去,那怎么行,但他又不能明着反对,所以他说:“But, you, you don’t want to seem too pushy.(可你总不能显得那么急促吧)。”

Monica反驳Ross说这绝对不会显得pushy, 因为Mark给了Rachel他家里的电话(it’s not pushy, he gave her his home number.),显然Mark是欢迎Rachel打电话给他的。

Friends

Chandler: I can’t believe you did this.
Ross: Chandler-
Joey: Me neither, y’know what-
Chandler: I’m still mad at you for not telling me.
Joey: What are you mad at me for?!
Ross: Chandler-
Chandler: You gotta let me slam the door!
Joey: Chandler, I didn’t kiss her, he did!

相信大家都会用be angry with sb 来表达“对某人生气”,其实在口语中还有个更夸张的说法,那就是be mad at sb,不过要注意这是典型的美式用法,英国人则说be mad with sb,例如:

My boss is mad at me for missing the meeting. (American English)
His wife will be really mad with him.(British English)

mad后面还可以跟介词about, be mad about sb 可不是“疯狂地生某人的气”,而是“疯狂地爱着某个人” 就相当于be crazy about sb,譬如:Jack and I were mad about each other.

It’s a lot harder to slam a door in someone’s face than it is to hang up on them.

be mad at sb
slam the door in somebody’s face

Friends

Monica: Rach, here’s your mail.
Rachel: Thanks, you can just put it on the table.
Monica: No, here’s your mail.
Rachel: Thanks, you can just put it on the table.
Monica: Would you just open it?
Rachel: Oh my god, oh, you guys are great.
Monica: We all chipped in.

No, here’s your mail. Thanks, you can just put it on the table. 最后Monica只得把信往Rachel的头上一敲说:“你能不能把信打开?(would you just open it?)”。在问句中用过去时would或could 一般表示客气,按理说Monica和Rachel这么熟了,她只需说 will you just open it?

We all chipped in to buy Amy a birthday present. 52 people in the music industry each chipped in $300 apiece.
