Lesson 9——A cold welcome On Wednesday evening, we went to the Town Hall. It was the last day of the year and a large crowd of people had gathered under the Town Hall clock. It would strike twelve in twenty minutes' time. Fifteen minutes passed and then, at five to twelve, the clock stopped. The big minute hand did not move. We waited and waited, but nothing happened. Suddenly someone shouted, ‘It's two minutes past twelve! The clock has stopped!’ I looked at my watch. It was true. The big clock refused to welcome the New Year. At that moment, everybody began to laugh and sing. We went to the Town Hall on New Year’s Eve. A lot of people had gathered there. (There were a lot of people there.) (A lot of people gathered by the Town Hall on New Year’s Eve.) The Town Hall clock would strike twelve in twenty minutes’ time. It stopped at 5 to 12. Someone found this at 2 past twelve. Then everyone began to laugh and sing. On Saturday morning, I went on a business trip to Beijing. He left for Shanghai yesterday. Chinese economy is now developing rapidly. He always waits for me at the door. They often laugh at us. She seldom watches TV. On Saturday morning, I went on a business trip to Beijing. It was the first day of a long holiday and a lot of people had left home to travel all over China. The plane to Beijing was crowded. It took off at nine thirty, 30 minutes late. Two hours passed and then, at eleven thirty, the pilot announced that we would land at the Beijing Airport in fifteen minutes’ time. I closed my eyes, and waited and waited, but the plane was still flying. Suddenly, someone shouted, “We have landed!” I looked out of the window. It was true. The plane stopped safely by a large building. At that moment, everybody began to clap hands and shout “thank you” to the pilot.
