Lesson 12

一、词义辨析

1.Small & Little

small仅指体积大小，是big或large的反义词

e.g. 1. He’s a small man, only five feet tall. 他是个小个子，只有5英尺高。

2.I wouldn’t like to live in such a small house. 我不愿意住在这么一所小房子里。

little 一般除用来指大小外，还带有一定的感情色彩，如疼爱、取笑、憎恶、鄙视等。

e.g.1. Poor little thing --- come here and let me look after you.

可怜的小东西，到这儿来让我照顾你

2. What’s that nasty little boy doing now?

那个可恶的小男孩现在在干什么哪？

2. Boat & Ship

boat通常指小船，如用桨划行的船、帆船或小机动船

ship指航海的大船，如轮船，战船等。

比较： I am only interested in sitting in a boat and doing nothing at all.

我仅仅对坐在小船里什么事也不做感兴趣。

The ship is going under the bridge.

那艘船正在大桥下面行驶。

二、 特殊难点

1.He will be away for two months. 他将出门两个月。

Be away 出门在外，离家在外

2.I’m going out. I’ll be back at six o’clock. 我要出去，6点钟就回来。

Be back 回来，回去

3.If anyone telephones, tell them I’ll be out all morning. 要是有人打电话来，告诉他们我一上午都不在家。

Be out 不在家

4.I went to Ted’s house and asked to see him but he wasn’t in. 我去了泰德的家，并要求见他，但他不在。

Be in 在家/办公室

5.Why don’t you forget it. It’s all over. 你为什么不把它忘了呢？ 一切都结束了。

Be over 结束，完了

6.What’s on at the local cinema this week? 本地电影院这周上演什么片子？

Be on 在上演

7.She is very ill. She can’t start work yet. She is not up to it.

Be not up to 不能胜任

8.set off = set out 表示 “出发，开始旅行”， 经常与for 连用，表示旅行的目的地：

e.g. 1. Tom and I set off early in the morning. 我和汤姆一大早就出发了。

2. We set out to go to the beach/set off for the beach. 我们出发去海边。

9.set up = establish, create 建立，创立：

e.g. Jansen has set up a new world record for the 400 metres.

简森已经创立了400米新的世界记录。

1.He will be back in ten minutes.

他会在十分钟内回来

2.A new play is on at the Globe Theatre.

环球影院在上演一部新剧。

3.When the concert was over, we went home.

音乐会结束我们就回家了。

4.They will set out/off very early tomorrow morning.

他们明天一早就出发。

5.You can’t take the exam yet. You are not up to it.

你还不能参加这个考试，你还没到这个水平。

6.He will be away from home for two months.

他将出门在外两个月。

7.She swam across the English Channel and set up a new world record.

她横游了英吉利海峡并创立了一项新的世界记录。
