第七十三课 The record-holder 纪录保持者

1．Children who play truant from school are unimaginative.
(1)主句：Children are unimaginative. 而who play truant from school是做了Children的定语，因为先行词是children，表示人，所以在定于从句中用的关系代词是who.比如类似的一句话:
The student whom I am looking for has gone home.
(2)play truant 也可以说成是 play hooky, 但是后者俚语的成分更重一些。
(3)unimaginative 缺乏想象力的，反义词是imaginative.

2. A quiet day's fishing, or eight hours in a cinema seeing the same film over and over again, is usually as far as they get.

(1)注意谓语是is,他的前面是连个并列的短语作主语，一个是A quiet day's fishing，一个是eight hours in a cinema，后面的seeing the same film over and over again当然指的是一种状态。
(2)系动词is后面的成分是表语。这里有一个短语as far as, 到...程度，比如说有这样的一个句子：
As far as I know, he made it at last. 就我所知，他最后取得了成功。

3. put to shame,使某人感到惭愧。那么课本上的句子就可以写成：A boy has put them to shame.一个男孩让这些所有的逃课的人都感到羞愧。那么是什么样的一个男孩，看后面是一个定于从句。来修饰这个男孩who, while playing truant, travelled 1,600 miles.他在逃学过程中旅行了1600英里。
区别几个词汇：P345.10
shame 名词，羞耻
ashamed 惭愧的，羞耻的
shamful 不体面的，可耻的，不可饶恕的

4. in the meantime=during that time, meanwhile在这个期间

5. No one noticed the boy as he crept off.
creep off=creep out of the boat.
creep in,偷偷混进
when we were having lessons, he crept in.当我们上课的时候，他偷偷混进来。

6.The driver gave him a few biscuits and a cup of coffee and left him just outside the city.
(1)outside the city=in the suburbs=on the outskirts of 在郊区
(2)leave sb. somewhere.
During the Christmas day, the whole family went out to travel, but left him at home.圣诞节全家都去旅游，只把他一个人留在家里。

7.The next car the boy stopped did not take him into the centre of Paris as he hoped it would, but to Perpignan on the French- Spanish border.
(1)as 翻译为“像...那样”，引导一个方式状语从句。比如：
He didn't do well as we expected. 他做得没有我们想象得那么好。
(2)到此我们看一下小男孩去过的几个城市：
Dover:多佛，英国东南部的一个港口
Calais:加莱，法国北部的港口
Paris:巴黎，法国首都
Perpignan:佩皮尼昂，法国和西班牙边界的城市

8. There he was picked up by a policeman and sent back to England by the local authorities.
pick up:重要短语
pick up有“拾起，买(东西)，使恢复精神, 加快, 看到”的意思.在文中的意思是被发现之后逮捕！比如有这样的例子：
He was picked up when he was trying to steal again.

9. He has set up a record for the thousands of children who dream of evading school.
(1)set up a record 创造纪录
而打破纪录应该说 break a record
(2)evade: 逃避，躲避，规避=avoid
(3)dream of sth. or doing sth.
