第九十四课 Future champions 未来的冠军

1.Experiments have proved that children can be instructed in swimming at a very early age实验证明，儿童在很小的时候就可以开始学习游泳。
be instructed in doing sth 被引导做某事 学习做某事
Young boys are easily instructed in doing sth bad.小男孩很容易被坏人引导去做坏事。

instruct vt．
(1)指导，教，传授：Dan instructs chemistry at a nearby college.
丹在附近的一所学院教化学。
(2)指示，命令，吩咐：I've been instructed to take place of you.
我奉命代替你的职位。

2.…children become expert at holding their breath under water even before they can walk．……孩子们甚至在还没有学会走路时就已经能熟练地在水下屏住呼吸了。
(1)expert表示“熟练者”、“专家”，后面通常跟 at／in+ doing sth．结构
Tom soon became an expert at tranlating. 汤姆不久便成了翻译专家了。
(2)hold one's breath 为固定短语，表示“屏住呼吸”：
When the competetion became very hot, everybody held their breath.比赛进行到最激烈的时候，每个人都屏住了呼吸。

3.appear to be 显出。。。的样子
The little girl appears to be frightened,when the dog comes across her.当那条狗接近她的时候，那个小女孩显的有点害怕。
The prisident appears to be very calm when he is telling that big lie.在说那个谎话的时候，那位总统显的很平静。

4.It is not long before they are so accustomed to swimming that they can pick up weights from the floor of the pool.
他们很快便适应了游泳，以致能捡起池底的物品。
(1)not long before 通常译为“不久”、“很快”。
It is not long before we can have a car.不久我们就能有一辆小汽车拉。
(2)so…that 引导的是结果状语从句。相当于too...to...太...以至于不能...
He is so poor that he can't even buy a piece of bread.(He is too poor to buy a piece of bread.)他太穷了连一片面包都买不起。
(3)pick up 表示“捡起”。weight 在这里指比重较大（因此能沉在水底）的物品。
(4)be accustomed to 表示“习惯的”、“适应了的”，后面通常跟名词或动名词：
After having been in London for 2 years,he was accustomed to everything there.在伦敦住了两年后，他对那的一切都适应了。

5.A game that is very popular with these young swimmers is…这些幼小的游泳运动员非常喜爱的一种游戏是……
popular表示“受欢迎的”、“讨人喜欢的”，常与with或among连用：
Football is very popular whih the boys.男孩子非常喜欢足球。
The professer is popular with the student in this college.这位教授在这所大学非常受欢迎。

6.Tricycles are lined up on the floor of the pool… 三轮车并排放在游泳池底上……
line up 为短语动词，表示“（使）排成行／排队”：
He never lines up when he buys the ticket.他买票的时候从不排队。
Line these chairs up, please.请把这些椅子排好。

7.Whether they will ever become future Olympic champions, only time will tell.
他们将来是否能成为奥林匹克的冠军，这只能由时间来作出回答。这是一个倒装句，宾语从句置于句首。通常，以疑问词引导的宾语从句会用于这种句型：
How they solve the problems ,only the Godknows.
他们怎么解决这个问题，只有天知道。
