Lesson 39 Am I all right?

先来看标题“Am I all right?”我是否痊愈？all right在不同的上下文会有不同的含义。这里是表示人的健康情况，意思是“良好的、痊愈的”。

1. While John Gilbert was in hospital, he asked his doctor to tell him whether his operation had been successful, but the doctor refused to do so.

In hospital和in the hospital的区别我们在33课中已经具体讲过了。简而言之，in hospital是表示“住院”，而in the hospital则表示“在医院”。

Whether引导的是一个间接一般疑问句。我们以前讲的间接引语都是针对陈述句所做的间接引语变化。而在这课里我们要介绍给大家“一般疑问句”和 “疑问词疑问句”是如何做间接引语的。（Seabow会做详细的讲解）

So在这里为代词，代替前面的动词不定式： to tell him whether his operation had been successful。

2. The following day, the patient asked for a bedside telephone.
Following在这里相当于next，表示“紧接着的、其次的”。

这里的ask for是“请求、索要”的意思。

3. When he was alone, he telephoned the hospital exchange and asked for Doctor Millington.

前面的课程中我们也已经讲过了alone和lonely的区别。简而言之，alone没有感情色彩，只表示一个人独处的状态；而lonely则感情至深，是我们当一个人独处时感到孤独、寂寞的心理写照。
课文中when he was alone只是表示“当他一个人的时候”，并没有感情色彩。

The hospital exchange是指“医院的电话交换台”，有些类似我们常说的“电话总机”，exchange做名词本来的意思就是“交换”（giving and receiving）。其实我们的电话总机其根本功能也就是发出电话和接进电话。所以，使用exchange非常贴切。此外，我们在和老外打交道中，特别是涉及到钱的兑换问题时，经常使用的一个词就是“exchange rate”，中文就是“兑换率”。

4. When the doctor answered the phone, Mr. Gilbert said he was inquiring about a certain patient, a Mr. John Gilbert.
来看inquire这个动词。
Inquire表示“询问”，比ask更为正式；有时拼写为enquire。
Inquire about是表示“询问某人某事的情况”。比如：
She inquired about your brother.她打听你兄弟的情况。
I’ll inquired about the train.我去问一下火车的情况。

Inquire after是表示“问候”，一般来说是问候人或是健康情况。
I shall inquire after his health.我将去探望他。
He inquired after you, and sent his kind regards.他向你问候。

Inquire for是“要求见到”、“找…接电话”的意思。
A man has been inquiring for you at the office.有人一直在办公室等着要见你。
While you were out, a young man rang up inquiring for you.你出去的时候，有人打电话找你。

Inquire into是“调查、追究”的意思。
The police are inquiring into the murder.警方正在调查这起谋杀案。

A Mr. John Gilbert
在姓氏前面加上不定冠词，表示你对这个人不熟悉，或者是不敢确定其情况的。比如：
A Johnson came to see you during your absence.你不在时，有位叫约翰逊人要求见你。
A Miss Li called up inquiring for you a moment ago.刚刚一个姓李的小姐打电话找你。

5. He asked if Mr. Gilbert’s operation had been successful and the doctor told him that it had been.
这里也是间接一般疑问句引语，所以使用了if作为引导词。句子的意思是：他问Mr. Gilbert的手术是否成功，医生告诉他手术很成功。

6. He then asked when Mr. Gilbert would be allowed to go home and the doctor told him that he would have to stay in hospital for another two weeks.
Stay in hospital是“住院”的意思。

another 可以表示 “外加一个” 或 “再来一个”的意思，后面可以跟few或带数字的复数名词，相当于more :
I’ll be here for another few weeks. ( = I’ll be here for a few more weeks.)
I’ve got another three days holiday. ( = I’ve got three more days holiday.)

7. Then Dr. Millington asked the caller if he was a relative of the patient. ‘No,’ the patient answered, ‘I am Mr. John Gilbert.’

之后，米灵顿医生问打电话的人是否是病人的亲属。“不是，”病人回答说，“我就是约翰.吉尔伯特先生。”
