第九十六课 The dead return 亡灵返乡

1.A Festival for the Dead is held once a year in Japan日本每年过一次“亡灵节”。
Festival表示盛大的节日 Spring festival 春节
held hold 的过去式 意思是举行
hold a meeting 举行会议 hold a wedding 举行婚礼
once a year 每年 He goes to school to see his teacher once a year. 他每年都回学校看望他的老师。
2.．… the dead are said to return to their homes and they are welcomed by theliving. ……据说死去的人要回到他们的家里来，活着的人则对他们表示欢迎。
(1)the dead与the living 均为定冠词+ 形容词结构，表示某类人。
the poor 穷人 the rich 富人 the wounded 受伤的人
be said to do it is said that 据说....
It is said that there is a very big fish in the lake
.据说哪个湖里有一条非常大的鱼
The big snake is said to eat a bull when it is very hungry.
据说在饿的时候那条大蛇能吃掉一头公牛。

3.As they are expected to be hungry after their long journey, food is laid out for them.因为预料到他们在经过长途旅行之后会感到饥饿，所以为他们摆放好了食品。
As 处于句首 引导原因状语 因为的意思
be expected to 被认为...被预料。。。
The little girl was expected to be dead ,but she was rescued by someone actually.
人们原以为那个小女孩已经死了，但是实际上她获救拉。
laid out 为短语动词，其含义之一为“摆出”、“摊开
Just as she laid out the meal, the telephone
rang.当她刚摆好饭菜的时候，电话响了。

4.(1)specially-made lanterns，特制的灯笼。
specially-made 是个复合形容词，由副词+过去分词构成。在第60课的词汇学习中，我们学习
了名词+ 名词构成的复合名词。过去分词经常与其他词构成复合形容词：
well-intentioned 善意的well-known 著名的well-preserved 保存／保养得好的
(2)hung hang 的过去式 悬挂 绞死 吊死
做悬挂讲时过去式为hung 做绞死 吊死时过去式为 hanged

5...thrown into a river or into the sea as it is considered 。。。
throw into 把...扔进...
He threw his dirty clothes into the washingmachine.他把他的脏衣服扔到洗衣机里去了。
as it is considered ...因为人们认为...
All the parents in that village didn't allow their children to go to school ,as it is considered knowledge can do nothing .那个村子的家长不让孩子们去学校，因为人们认为知识没有任何用处。

6.Thousands of 成千上万的
hundreds of 成百上千的

7.(1)a moving spectacle，一个感人的场面。
moving 为形容词，表示“动人的”、“感人的”：
This is really a moving film ,most of the audience wept during the show.这个电影
非常感人，大部分观众都感动的落泪了。
(2)their return journey to the other world，返回另一个世界。
world 可以与一些限定词连用以表示“今世／现世”、“来世”、“黄泉”等：
the next world / the world to come 来世
She believes that she will meet her dead parents in the other world.
她相信她会与她死去的父母在阴间重逢。
