IELTS Sample Essay: Climate Change
by Mr. Jeenn Lee Hsieh for www.360abc.com IELTS Topic Writing task 2 Climate change is now an accepted threat to our planet, but there is not enough political action to control excessive consumerism and pollution. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Example writing: Our planet has a problem. It's getting warmer without having been noticed until more recently. Scientists mostly agree that global warming is alarming, warning that, unless joined political actions are taken without delay, human beings could face extinction probably within this millenium. It's now known, at least in part, the cause and effect of this phenomenon known as greenhouse effect. Many countries are involved in looking for solutions. What's happening? The effect of such a phenomenon has become an accepted threat to the earth. Some signs of climate change are too obvious to be ignored. Whatever its cause, global warming may have contributed to more extreme weather from prolonged droughts to severe floods. Scientists have found the gradual shrinkage of ice shelves in Antarctica. They say that several ice shelves have retreated and collapsed in the past 50 years. As a consequence, sea levels are rising through the themal expansion of water and the melting of glaciers around the world. Ozone depletion has been held accountable for the cause. For roughly a billion years, scientists say, the ozone layer of the earth's atmosphere has shielded our planet from the sun's ultraviolet rays. Human beings' industrialization and consumerism, plus pollution of millions of automobiles, gases and other man-made chemical compounds, have punched a hole twice the size of Europe over Antarctica. Our world is now less protected than it used to be before the Industrial Revolution. The good news is an increasing awareness of the problem resulting from human activity. As of 1997 more than 160 countries had signed the Montreal Protocol, committing to cut use of CFCs by half. Since then concentrations of ozone-depletion chemicals seem to have started decreasing. Another good news is that ozone-depletion is said to be reversible, meaning the ozone layer may even return to its original state sometime in the future. If not, human beings will have only themselves to blame.
