People's character is influenced by environment rather than genetics. Do you agree or disagree?

Research indicates that the characteristics we were born with have more influence on our personality and development than the experience we had in life. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Example writing:

It is widely believed that people's character is influenced by both genetics and environment in different ways and to varying degrees. Genetics is nature while environment is nurture. Speaking of the general influence on human personality and development, nurture matters more than nature.

There is no denying that genes play a role in shaping a person's behavior (and disease). Researches show some aspects of character are inherited. The discovery of DNA has further proved the point. Studies, showing that identical twins raised apart share an uncanny number of behavioral traits, back that up. For example, twins think alike and prefer the same colors and smells. But so far attempts to tag a particular behavior to a particular gene have beren problematic. It means that many genes in many generations are at work like many notes on the piano displaying intricate compositions. Therefore, genetics as natural influence on character tend to defy conclusive explanations.

In comparision, the influence of environment or nurture is more obvious and convincing. People are fashioned by education much as plants by cultivation. The experience in life is closely linked to families, friends, classmates, co-workers, inmates, as well as to the media like television, radio, the internet. The environmental influence is so overwhelming that few would doubt, for example, that criminal conducts are often the result of bad nurturing. Most psychologists also believe that a serial killer is made, not born.

Genes are not fate, anyway. How much genetic characteristics have influence on people's character requires further studies. It is clear to see how nurture affects people's personality and behavior. Admitting heredity and variations in organisms may be behind a person's character in certain respects, genetics as nature cannot be considered decisive in shaping a person's overall character. Ceretainly more decisive is how a person is nurtured. The environment definitely makes the differfence.
