IELTS Sample Essay: Education
by Mr. Jeenn Lee Hsieh for www.360abc.com IELTS Topics Writing task 2 1. Education is a lifelong task. Do you agree or disagree? 2.Education is sometimes considerd as something for the youth. Some people, however, consider it as a lifelong task. What is your opinion? Give reasons and support your ideas with specific supports. Writing Example: Education by definition is the process of acquiring general knowledge particularly for the youth. It chiefly suggests the information acquired through schooling. It is questionable, however, that education as such is a lifelong task as if having to stay in schools and colleges for the rest of the lives. Certainly not. Does it make modern sense of an old Chinese saying that " it takes 10 years to plant a tree while it takes 100 years to educate a person?" Is education practically a matter of the learning process ''from cradle to grave?'' Schooling is important for intellectual growth. And intellectual growth should, in the words of Albert Einstein, ''commence at birth and cease only at death.'' In this sense, education is about the desire to learn and never to give up doing until the last breath. It is like people learning all the time and the tombstones being only their diplomas. Schooling has the purpose of kindling desires so the youth would continue the learning process as long as they live. Meanwhile, teachers are supposed to help open students' minds for seeking knowledge rather than filling the buckets with information. By intending to teach, they must learn, too. It is logical that those who dare to teach must never cease to learn. And they can teach best what they most need to learn. By the time boys and girls leave schools and colleges, it is so much better for them to know how much they do not know. Although obtaining knowledge is the purpose of school and college education, actuallly the desires to learn do not and should not end at graduation ceremonies. In fact, in terms of wisdom as accumulated knowledge, self-education alone or after completing schooling must be the means to acquire it through learning everyday until the last days. The important thing is, of course, not to stop learning because once learning is neglected in life as a journey, the traveller "walks lame" to the end of life. The concept of learning as education must be aggressive day by day so that one could become wiser today than yesterday, knowing better about life. And life is, to quote Helen Keller, ''a succession of lessons which must be lived to be understood.'' In other words, something may be learned, unlearned, and relearned each day This process should no way be stopped for ''Learning is like rowing upstream: not to advance is to be back.'' By saying this, Confucius refers to all ages. In pursuit of knowledge and wisdom, age is then more an attitude than years. This attitude is shared by brilliant persons like Henry Ford, insisting: ''Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty.''
