你一定有过用锤子敲钉子时没有敲在钉子的头上，却敲到自己的手指或者把钉子　敲弯了的不愉快的经历吧！所以敲钉子一定要不偏不倚地敲在钉子的头上，这样固然不会敲痛自己的手指，更重要的是，只有这样才能把钉子笔直地敲进去，以见功效。这便是这个成语的字面意义。不过这个成语　常用来比喻一个人所说的话恰到好处，因而相当于汉语中的“击中要害、一针见血”：

I think you hit the nail on the head as you said that what he lacked was diligence, not intelligence.
你说他缺少的不是智力而是毅力，我认为你的话击中要害了。

He is a man of few words but when he speaks he often hits the nail on the head.
他是一个话不多的人，但他一开口，总能一语中的。

You have talked a lot but I’m afraid you have so far not hit the nail one the head.
你讲了许多话，但恐怕还没有讲到点子上去。
