TOEFL EssayF: Different Clothes
by Mr. Jeenn Lee Hsieh for www.360abc.com TOEFL topic Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? People behave differently when they wear different clothes. Do you agree that different clothes influence the way people behave? Use specific examples to support your answer. Example writing Human beings have learned to cover their bodies originally for protection from natural elements rather than for changing behaviors. Any person in different clothes, or when naked, cannot be somebody else. People usually dress themselves differently or happen to be naked because of different circumstances which influence their behaviors. Different clothes do not necessarily or directly influence the way people behave. Although clothing oneself is a social behavior, different clothes are actually meant for different circumstances which dictate human behaviors. Since behaviors are linked to personalities, how people choose their clothing does little to change their behaviors. People wear different clothes to match different occassions. They may seem to behave differently due to different clothes, but what dictates particular behaviors must be a particular circumstance like a romantic moment or a business meeting. The moment comes when a woman decides to dress sexy. She looks sexy, feels sexy and acts accordingly. It is not how much or how little she wears that influeces her behavior. Rather, it is the particular mood which makes the difference in behavior. Likewise, with a formal suit and a fashion tie, a man goes to an important meeting. He is supposed to behave professionally regardless of clothing style. He must be serious and should not be otherwise. The habit of wearing particular clothes is of course a behavior of the civilized society. The society determines fashion styles. A fashion-conscious community is judgmental when it comes to the external appearances of its members. As individuals, people seek the acceptance and approval of the society to which they belong. People may behave differently because of different occassions and not because of different clothes. Little could influence the eating behavior of life-long beggars even if they were in vanity clothes worthy of kings, for example. In another opposite case, so the fable goes, a naked king can behave as a king does. Paradoxically, clothes make a woman more than a man. Both sexes behave differently, for that matter. Ask any woman around the corner why in her mind there is always a lovely dress. If she were honest enough, the answer could be that they dress to please themselves and to annoy other women. In comparison, a man is inclined to believe that good clothes open to all doors. In nice clothing, he thinks he stands better chances in the society. Thus, women and men are motivated to wear different clothes for different reasons in different moods under different circumstances. People change clothes. The reverse is far from true.
