TOEFL Topic: External Appearances
Test of Written English

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? One should never judge a person by external appearances. Use specific reasons and details to support your answer.

Example writing by Mr. Jeenn Lee Hsieh

Good judgment requires prudence beyond sight and sound. It happens sometimes that the reflections of external appearances are misleading. There are times when eyes look but do not see; and ears listen but do not hear. A person's real character may not always reveal itself in reflections. When it comes to knowing people, you cannot tell who is what in a short period of time. Some cheat. Most don't. Others everywhere between. Without prudence or caution, you are likely to fall a victim to a roaming wolf dressed to kill or to a stalking flatter looking for easy preys.

The reflection in sight may not be what it looks like.. When prudence is off guard, it's probable that you mistake a wolf for a sheep. The fable about a wolf in a sheep's skin refers to those playing a role contrary to their character. Contact of this kind is of course considered dangerous. Needless to say the rest of the story. In real life, cunning cheaters may be a big risk under disguise. Attractive wrapping paper does not always match the real thing inside a package.

Flattery in speech and gesture is much alive in a person's outlook. An ill-minded cheater may be praising you on all occassions. Unfortunately, vanity replaces prudence. Your judgment is moved to the wrong side. Words sound too sweet to be real, but also too nice not to be believed. People like to listen to words of honey and take all praising for granted. Here usually lies an illusion in judging a person by external apparences.

To know a person's real character, it's therefore very important to refrain from making an unthoughtful judgment by the reflections of sight and sound. There is always a margin for error. Judging a person by outer appearances is not unlike looking at a rear-looking mirror near the driver's seat. The objects that appear in the mirror are closer than you see them. Warning: the danger of your being fooled is closer than you think.
