TOEFL Sample Essay A Small Company
by Mr. Jeenn Lee Hsieh for www.360abc.com TOEFL Test of Written English writing topic Some people prefer to work for a large company. Others prefer to work for a small company. Which would you prefer? Use specific reasons and details to support your choice. Example writing: What motivates a person to work is the quantity of money rather than the size of a company. Money being not the case, job-seekers would more often than not choose a large company, if only for employment security reson. Size matters: the larger, the better. Nevertheless, it does not necessarily mean a giant company is entirely risk-free. To make a difference contrary to the mainstream, it is advisable for a beginner like me to go for a small company. My standpoints are that a company, just for being small in size, offers greater opportunities to learn the value of working experience and the fun of it. A common tendency among today's young men and women is looking for the price of everything and the value of nothing. The value of working experience is best understood by joining a small team. Usually in a big company, an employee is limited to a specific, often boring, function. In comparison, a similar co-worker may be assigned to more than one task. Having fewer workers means more work to share. Getting more share of work to do makes people busier, therefore feeling more important. In short, while working in a small company I would feel like somebody. I would otherwise feel nobody in the crowd or a large company. When it comes to the value and not the price of working, it is the feeling of being useful that counts. There would be more fun finding myself in a small company because of closer interactive relationships. Colleagues would readily become friends, the team spirit being high. In fact, it may not be a big thing but many small things, like birthdays being remembered, or going as far as calling the boss by first name. Sometimes, real fun involves risks as well, like sailling in a small boat braving life's uncertainty and prevailing against the odds. This, too, could be a valuable lesson: ruough seas make good sailors. The bad thing about working for a small company is that it seems easier to be out of work. Actually the same fear may apply to a large company, and for the same cause. A person is sent packing when considered one too many. It is a myth that a giant company, like a giant ship, cannot fail under any circumstances. That reminds me of the tragedy of the "unsinkable Titanic." It is sad to note the heartening scene in the movie when at last surviviors are being rescued to small life rafts floating in the icy North Atlantic. Here is a paradox: a large ship, like a large company, is too big to sink. It is also too big to be saved.
