TOEFL Sample Essay: Countryside
by Mr. Jeenn Lee Hsieh for www.360abc.com TOEFL Topic Tedst of Written English It is better for children to grow up in the countryside than in a big city. Do you agree or disagree? Use specific reasons and examples to develop your essay. Related IELTS topic Should a child be brought up in a village or a city? Example writing: Rearing a child is always rewarding. And a lot of fun, too, especially when a kid is pre-teenaged. For a child the time from birth to twelve years of age marks the initial stage of a lifelong learning process. Those years are carefree years in a person's life. During this period, most children learn things by playing. A village rather than a big city provides small boys and girls with more outdoors activities in contact with green environment. The countryside promises better conditions for a fit body and a sound mind. Chances are that, far from the maddening problems of urban places, a child may grow up physically and mentally healthier. Having fun is the job of small children. There are plenty of fun around in the countryside. Boys and girls brought up in a big city usuallly stay indoors most of the time. In the countryside, children, if they like, may run and walk, often barefooted, freely in green lands along rivers and ponds and lakes. Physical exercises abound. Early to bed and early to rise is the way of life. As expected, they appear happier than their urban counterparts mostly being caged in apartment buildings. More contact with clean air is always desirable. Polluted air in a big city is good for nobody. In the countryside, children have more opportunities of making sense of natural environment. They learn the real things on their own. Trees and flowers. Fruits and vegetables. Insects and animals. Pigs and cows. It is much less a material world but is a spiritual playground. Learning directly from nature is a true experience for children to build a sound mind. Childhood is by no means a time to know the price of everything and the value of nothing. Of course, there is never as much luxury and comfort enjoyed by city kids. In comparison, village children's happy hours are spent more in freedom than in boredom. Perhaps, one drawback to raising a child in a village is schooling. Indeed, cities offer more options. However, after childhood years village boys and girls certainly become more independent with a healthy body and a healthy mind. They may then commut to urban highschools, without having to leave their happy childhood years far behind.
