TOEFL Sample Essay A Reliable Friend
by Mr. Jeenn Lee Hsieh for www.360abc.com TOEFL Topic Test of Written English What do you want most in a friend? Someone who is intelligent, or someone who has a sense of humor, or someone who is reliable? Which of these characterstics is most important to you? Use reasons and specific examples to explain your choice. Writing Example: Mistrust is said to be poison to friendship. It takes years to build up trust, only to destroy it in seconds We shall have no true friends unless we are trust-worthy as well. Being reliable is therefore a virtue among true friends. It matters little whether a friend is intelligent or has a sense of humor. Where there is no trust, there is no true friendship. What friends are for, should they be other than reliable? It is natural that we enjoy the company of people with a good sense of humor. They may teach us to look at life less seriously when life happens to be boring or even stressful. When it comes to facing life's complexity, however, friends gifted with intelligence may help by enlightening our minds. Neverthelss, friends of either type are by far not so important as friends who are simply reliable. In times of troubles, friendship has nothing to do with intelligence or humor. It should come as no surprise that only true friends walk in while the rest walk out. Indeed, a reliable friend is a treasure of life money cannot buy. Such is a true friend who has our needs answered. When we are happy, a true friend redoubles our joy more than the best humor does. And our griefs are cut in half by the presence of a true friend when humor ceases to be a good medicine. Friendship, like love, is a strong emotion which often defies defining by intelligence. Also like love, true friendship, built on mutual trust, is much more heart than head. A reliable friend has become a nearest relation, but is hard to find. Or, I could be wrong in being cynical about friendship? Friendship might otherwise be mostly an attitude toward life. Why not try to find a true friend in every friend coming around? If everyone starts doing so, then everyone will find a true friend in everyone. Underlying this attitude is perhaps the logic that the feeling of trust is mutual, which is very unlike intelligence or a sense of humor. Being reliable is so much valuable that a friend of this kind must be rewarded. And what is more rewarding than paying a friend of trust in kind?
