It is generally agreed that society benefits from the work of its members. Compare the contrbutions of artists to society with the contributions of scientists to society. Which type of contributions do you think is valued more by your society? Give specific reasons to support your answer.

Sample writing

It is hard to imagine what our world would be like without the contributions of artists as well as scientists now and in the past. Arts of various forms have made emotional sense of mankind by providing spiritual beauty in harmony with nature. Science, in compaison, has discovered partly the truth about nature on the planet and beyond, bringing about many inventions that have changed the world into a different one.

Thanks to great masters of arts such as Michael Angelo, Vicente Van Gogh and Pablo Picasso, etc., our society has been able to inherit valuable insights into human hearts. The contributions of artists since known history have been spiritual. Since arts imitate life and nature, artists seem to have been holding mirrors to the inner nature where lies the meaning of life. In this sense, the work of artists tends to be subjective and idealistic as compred with the work of scientists, being more objective and materialistic.

Scientists from ancient Greece to the recent discovery of DNA have been engaged in looking for truth. A number of discoreires have been crucial, including the fact about the earth going around the sun by Galileo, the principle of gravity by Newton, the evolution of species by Darwin, and others joining forces to pave the way for modern science and technology as we see today. Society has benefited largely from those results which have made communications faster, labor less strenous, and life more enjoyable. It can be expected that more discoveries are on the way, bringing more benefits to us.

That the work of scientists is valued more by our society is easy to understand. Ours is a materialistic society. Also, it seems to me that there is atistic beauty about science. According to Albert Einstein, all great artists are always scientists. This statement could have been said by Leonardo da Vinci as artist and scientist at the same time. In appreciation of the wonderful contributions of both scientists and artists to society, we are sure they are all great minds. And, great minds think alike.
