TOEFL Sample Essay: Advertising
by Mr. Jeenn Lee Hsieh for www.360abc.com Writing topic Some people say that advertising encourages us to buy things we really do not need. Others say that advertisements tell us about new products that will improve our lives. Which viewpoint do you agree with? Use reasons and examples to support your answer. Sample essay To understand the positive role of advertising in a market-oriented economy we may just as well imagine doing without it. Plenty of choices of consumer goods would be unknown to us. Seeing only negative influence of advertisements is as if looking at just a few trees but missing an entire forest behind, which is the positive power of advertisements. There is no denying the impact of advertising on people's behavior as an average person may come across hundreds of advertisements almost everyday. Advertising provides useful information to potential consumers freely selecting new products or services. All advertisements are supposed to be tempting, but far from lying. There is a feeling about the public perception of advertising increasingly negative. Some advertisements, indeed, may be too good to be true or too persuasive to be ignored. Often consumers are motivated to purchase products or services they really do not need. That implies false information which makes goods more expensive. As a result, the unhappy buyers may have advertisements to blame. Also, complaints are widely heard about execesive advertsing almost in every media outlet. So much so that repeated advertisements have become a boredom with which few can put up. It is true that the high sales of popular consumer goods reflect the power of advertising rather than the real needs of society in which they are sold. Usually this is the effect of impulsive buying. To be fair, advertisements mostly tell the public about new things that improve people's lives, ranging from food to tourism to medical care. Advertising promotes consumerism, which in turn pushes production, which creates more jobs, therefore, more buying power. This cycle is virtuous, of course. In fact, modern advertising has become so effective that even governments and non-profit sectors are also resorting to advertising as a means to inform people against flu attacks or HIV infections, among others. Personally I have found advertisements particularly entertaining, apart from being helpful and informative. Many a time I have enjoyed advertisements immensely, thinking what an art it is of human intelligence good enough to get money through the sights and sounds of the mass media. It is out of my mind that advertisements can be harmful. Anyway, a few bad effects may be controled and forgiven because dvertising has become not only a reality but also a necessity. 本教程由来自台湾大学和智利大学的谢振礼老师为世博英语网站独家撰写,旨在提高大家托福雅思写作的实战水平。未经谢振礼老师和世博英语授权,其他媒体和个人不得转载!
