TOEFL Topic
Test of Written English

People remember special gifts or presents that they have received. Why? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

Example writing:

It's fitting for people to remember the gifts that they have received, particularly those gifts sent from persons very special to them. Often it isn't the face-value of the gift that matters, but the love or friendship that gives it. That is to say, what is better remembered is not so much the gift as the giver of the gift. Size matters, of course. Who could have forgotten a gift worth US$1 million in time of need? From anyone? The present would be too overwhelming not to be remembered for entire life!

To love is to give. People can give without loving, but cannot love without giving. Children are given gifts on birthday, Children's Day and Christmas. Parents receive presents on Father's Day or Mother's Day. Lovers exchange symbols of love on Valentin's Day. Rings on weddings. Añways a lover values the gift of the lover as well as the love of the giver.

Some gifts are given to show freindship and goodwill. People may remember the intentions behind the gifts. The excellence of a gift lies in its appropriateness rather than in its value. The manner of giving is worth more than the gift. For example, people send flowers on such occasions as graduation, retirement, inauguration, or sadly, funeral. It's done as a privilege and not as a duty. Worthy of remembrance is the concern and generosity that contribute to social cohesion and solidarity.

Different gifts can be special in different ways. To remember both the giver and the gift is to appreciate the love or friendship. Just feeling gratitude and not appreciating it is like wrapping a present without sending it--be it a hug or a book, all being one size that fits all. In fact, in a divine sense, people had better remember each day as a gift. Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. And today? Today is a gift. That's why we call it the "present."
