那一夜星光灿烂

Thousands of shooting stars（流星） provided（提供） a dazzling（使人眩目的） light show that amazed veteran（老手） and novice（新手） stargazers（看星星的人） alike（同样地） as the Leonid meteor shower（狮子座流星雨） made the moonless sky appear to rain light. At the peak（高峰） of the shower, as many as 1,250 meteors per hour streaked（使留下条痕） overhead.

成千上万颗流星将晴朗的夜空照耀的无比灿烂，让新老天文爱好者叹为观止。在这场流星雨的高峰阶段，空中划过的流星达到每小时1250颗之多。

About 150 Chinese who gathered at midnight on the roof（屋顶） of a 550-year-old Ming Dynasty stone observatory（天文台） in Beijing were overjoyed（狂喜的） when the first meteor tore（撕扯） across the sky leaving an ephemeral（短暂的） fiery（燃烧的） trail in its wake（尾波）.

在中国，约有150名天文爱好者聚集在北京一个有550年历史的明代天文台的屋顶上等待一睹流星雨的风采。当第一颗流星拖着火红的尾巴划破夜空时，人们不禁欣喜若狂。

The meteors are called Leonids because they appear to come from the direction of the constellation Leo（狮子座）. Astronomers（天文学家） expect another such shower in 2099.

这些流星之所以被命名为“狮子座流星”，是因为它们是从狮子星座的方向飞来的。天文学家预测下一次类似规模的狮子座流星雨将要等到2099年。

1．shower做名词，主要有以下用法。

（1）表示“淋浴、淋浴器、淋浴间”，如：
I take a cold shower every day.
我每天用冷水淋浴。
Why does the phone always ring when I’m in the shower?
怎么我一进洗澡间电话就响？

（2）表示“短时间的雨或雪”，如：
There was a hard shower.
下了一阵骤雨。

（3）美式英语中，(为新娘或即将分娩的妇女等举行的)送礼会称为shower，如：
The neighbors held a shower for the girl.
邻居为姑娘举行了一个送礼会。

2．expect的意思是“预料、预期”，主要用法如下。

（1）expect + that从句
The troops expect the attack will come at dawn.
军方预计黎明开战。

（2）expect to do sth.
He expected to finish the work by March.
他预期三月份完成这项工作。

（3）在英式口语中，人们用expect来表达think的意思，如：
I expect you are right.
我想你是对的。

小词as用处多

虽然只有两个字母组成，as却是纵横语法界的“多栖词”呢！

1．as做介词，意思是“作为”，如：
He doesn't like people treat him as a child.
他不喜欢人们把他当小孩子对待。
（在翻译时，介词的含义通常是隐含其中，不必特别指出。）

2．as做连词，如：
As he wasn't ready in time，we went without him．
因他未及时准备好，我们没有等他就走了。

3．as做副词,如：
He recited as much of the poem as he could remember．
他把诗中记得住的都背诵出来了。
