2.（作物）歉收, (能力等) 丧失

Words failed me at the last minute.

到最后我说不出话来了。

3. 使失望；辜负

His courage failed him in the end.

到最后,他泄气了。

His friends failed him when he most needed them.

当他最需要朋友的时候，他们却令他失望。

4. 衰退；衰弱

The wind failed and the sea returned to calmness.

风停了,海面上恢复了一片寂静。

核心句型：条件句

1.if + 条件从句，+主句 ：表示“如果……”。条件句中的

谓语用一般时态表示将来时态；主句也可以放在前面。

He will lend a hand if you really need it.

如果你真的需要帮助的话，他会帮你。

What can we do if they don’t cooperate with us?

如果他们不和我们合作，那该怎么办？

2.so long as + 条件从句，+主句： 表示“只要……”。

也可以说as long as……

So long as there is a chance to save the patient’s life,

the doctor will never give up.

只要还有挽救病人生命的机会，医生就不会放弃。

3.provided that +条件从句，+主句 ： 表示“假如……的话，

只有……”等假设条件。也可以说“if and only if, on condition

that , providing that ”等形式来代替。

You can use this room provided that you keep it clean and tidy.

如果你能保持房间干净整洁，你就可以用这间房子。

Provided that we get support from them, we will win the match.

假如我们能取得他们的支持，我们就能赢得比赛。

4.主句+ unless +条件从句 ：表示“除非……否则……，如果不……”，

相当于“if ……not”。

The patient will die unless an operation is performed.

=The patient will die if an operation is not performed.

如果不动手术，病人就会死。

5.主句+ once +条件从句 ： 表示“一旦……，就会……”

Once he has made up his mind, nothing can make him change it.

他一旦拿定主意，什么也别想让他改变。

6.supposing / suppose +条件从句，+主句 ：表示“假设……”

Supposing something should go wrong, what will you do then?

假如出了什么问题，你怎么对付？

7.given that + 从句 +主句 ： 表示“考虑到……”

Given that they are inexperienced, they’ve done a good job.

考虑到他们缺乏经验这一点，他们已经做得不错了。

8.what if ……= what will happen if…… ：

表示“如果……要是……的话，怎么办呢？”

What if our plan doesn’t work?

如果我们的计划不能实施，怎么办？

9.祈使句，+and +简单句 其中的and 表示“那么”

祈使句，+or +简单句 其中的or 表示“否则”

Hand me the money, or I’ll kill you！

把钱给我，否则，我杀了你！

Hand me the money , and I’ll spare you.

把钱给我，我就饶了你。
