pity

take / have pity on sb 同情某人

out of pity 出于怜悯[同情]

I gave the beggar some money out of pity.

出于同情，我给了乞丐一点钱。

pitiful 令人同情的

Might as well…… 最好还是……

表示将就、退而求其次的无奈

=May as well……

It is hot outside, you might as well stay at home.

外面热，你最好还是呆在家里。

核心用法： may , might 表示推测, 有“也许…”的意思

（对比17课must表示推测的用法）

may, might 用在句子中表示推测的时候相当于句子中有

possible, perhaps, maybe 等词。

He may be busy getting ready for his trip.

也许他正忙着准备旅行呢。

He may not be at home.

也许他不在家。

He might come soon.

也许他马上就到。

He may have been at home for two hours.

他也许在家待了两个小时了。

It may have been raining for hours.

雨恐怕不停地下了几个小时了。

句型模仿：might 用在句子中表示推测

1.---Do you think he’ll telephone tonight?

---He might telephone, but I don’t think he will.

2.---Do you think she telephoned last night?

---She might have telephoned, but I don’t think she did.

3.---Do you think they’ll arrive tonight?

---They might arrive, but I don’t think they will.

4.---Do you think she arrived last night?

---She might have arrived, but I don’t think she did.

5.---Do you think he left this morning?

---He might have left, but I don’t think he did.

6.---Do you think he’ll leave this morning?

---He might leave, but I don’t think he will.

7.---Do you think they’ll go to the party?

---They might go, but I don’t think they will.

8.---Do you think he wrote to her?

---He might have written, but I don’t think he did.

9.---Do you think she went to the party?

---She might have gone, but I don’t think she did.

10.—Do you think he’ll write to her?

---He might write, but I don’t think he will.
