Lesson 32 Shopping made easy

1. 首先来看一下题目：
Shopping made easy= Shopping is made easy

2. People are not so honest as they once were.人们不再像以前那样诚实了。

其中的句型“not so＋形容词/副词＋as…”表示否定的同等比较，可以译为“不如…那样…”它所引导的比较状语从句常是省略句。如：
This pen is not so good as that one. (省略了is)
She is not so clever as we think. (省略了she is )

Once表示“以前”、“曾经”时只能与动词的过去式连用。比如：
He once worked at a large company.他曾经在一家大公司工作过。

3．The temptation to steal is greater than ever before --- especially in large shops.
偷窃的诱惑力比以往任何时候更强烈。

To steal是动词不定式，用来作temptation的定语。说明是什么样的诱惑。
To引导不定式(+动词原形)和to作介词(+名词或代词)的区别很大：
The temptation to smoke is strong for him.
对他来说吸烟有很强的诱惑力。（to smoke是不定式）
The cake on the table is a great temptation to the child.
桌上的蛋糕对那孩子是个极大的诱惑。（to the child为介词短语）

4. A detective recently watched a well-dressed woman who always went into a large store on Monday mornings.

Well-dressed 是合成形容词，由副词+过去分词构成，类似的词还有 well-informed 消息灵通的；wide-spread 普遍的

On Monday mornings：morning用复数形式是表示经常性的情况，它前面有修饰词Monday，所以介词要用on。这两点我们在以前的课程中已经多次提到了，比如第二课的On Sundays和第九课的On Wednesday evening。

5．One Monday, there were fewer people in the shop than usual when the woman came in, so it was easier for the detective to watch her.
One在此处表示“某一个”，不能用a代替。
A和one的区别要点：
不定冠词a它通常用于表示不确定的人或事物以及第一次提到的人或事物。
表示数量时，one比a的语气要强。
比较：There is a boy in the classroom. 教室里有个男孩。
There is only one boy in the classroom. 教室里只有一个男孩。

不表示强调时，a和one有时可以互换。
叙述故事时常将one+表示时间的名词用于句首，而不用a。

One afternoon, she set out from the coast in a small boat.
一天下午，她乘坐小船从海岸出发了。

than usual是固定搭配，表示“比平常”。Than usual始终与比较级连用。
He came earlier than usual.他来的比平时早。

这个句子比较长，there were引导的是主句。When引导的是它的时间状语从句，so引导的是结果状语从句。
在这个结果状语从句：it was easier for the detective to watch her中，it为先行词，真正的主语是不定式短语for the detective to watch her。不定式短语较长，作主语时通常要用先行词it作为形式主语, 我们不妨把 “ It is + 形容词+ for someone to do” 记作一个固定结构，表示
“某人干某事是…”

It was unusual for him to be late. 他迟到是不寻常的。

6．After a little time, she chose one of the most expensive dresses in the shop and handed it to an assistant who wrapped it up for her as quickly as possible.

The most expensive是expensive的最高级形式。

Hand to是表示“交给、递给”意义。

Wrap up是“包起来”的意思。

As …as possible是固定短语，表示“尽可能…”。

as soon as possible 尽可能快 (asap)
Come as early as possible.尽可能早点来。
Please speak as clearly as possible.请尽可能讲得清楚一点。

7.Then the woman simply took the parcel and walked out of the shop without paying.
Simply表示“仅仅”、“只”，有加强语气的作用。

Without paying可以当作是整个句子的方式状语，表示“没有…就…”的意思。而这里paying是动名词，表示“支付、付钱”。所以without paying就是“没有付钱就…”的意思。

8. The girl ‘gave’ her mother a free dress once a week !
这句话也可以说为：The girl ‘gave’ a free dress to her mother once a week !

gave加上引号，表示不是真正的给，而是偷。

“once a+表示时间的名词”可以表示频率。
I write to my parents once a month.我每月给父母写一封信。
