第八十课 The Crystal Palace 水晶宫

1． which was built in Hyde Park for the Great Exhibition of 1851.
(1)这是一个非限定性关系从句，修饰逗号前的 the Crystal Palace。
这个从句如果去掉并不影响主句的意思。
(2)be built for 为...而建，
(3)Great Exhibition=World's fair 世界博览会
fair 可以指展览会
所以 a book fair 就是书展

2.It was one of the biggest buildings of all time…它是有史以来最高大的建筑物之一……

(1)of all time表示有史以来、空前的，常与形容词的最高级连用，表示范围：
He is one of the greatest artests of all time.
他是有史以来最伟大的艺术家之一。
(2)one of+最高级+复数名词结构的语气比直接用形容词最高级+名词结构要缓和些，不那么绝对。试比较：
She is the most beautiful girl on campus.
她是校花。(强调最漂亮)
She is one of the most beautiful girls on campus.
她是校园内比较漂亮的一个。(是很漂亮，但不一定是最漂亮的)

3.A great many 很多，后面接的名词要用复数。比如：
A great many students decide to take part in this long-distance race.很多学生决定参加这次长跑。
而many a也表示很多，可是后面的名词要用单数。比如：
Many a student decides to take part in this long-distance race.

4.There was also a great deal of machinery on display. 参展的还有很多机器。

(1)machinery为“机器”、“机械装置”的总称，是集合名词，要与单数动词搭配。某个具体的机器可用 machine或者 a piece of machinery来表示：
This is a wonderful piece of machinery/a wonderful machine.
这是一台奇妙的机器。
There is a lot of new machinery/There are many new machines in our factory.
我们厂里有许多新机器。
(2)on display与下面一句话中的 on show同义，都表示“陈列着”、“展示着”，在句子中可以作状语、定语或表语等：
另外还有几个类似的短语：
on business 因公出差
on foot 步行
on duty 值班
on purpose 故意
on fire 着火
on the whole 总体来说
on any account 无论如何
on the average 平均
on second thoughts 经过进一步考虑

5.on arriving in England=as soon as they arrive in England

6.There were six million visitors in all.参观的人数总共是600 万。
(1)in all为固定短语，其含义之一为“总共”、“合计”：
At the wedding there were over 100 people in all.
参加婚礼的共有一百多人。
(2)be used to do 被用来做...
be used to doing/sth. 习惯于...
I am used to it. 我已经习惯它。
I am used to getting up early. 我习惯于早起。
used to do 过去常常做某事
I used to keep silent when I met strangers, but now I am brave enough to talk to them.
我过去见到陌生人不敢说话，现在勇敢多了。

7.It remained one of the most famous buildings in the world.它 一直是世界上最著名的建筑物之一。
(1)remain在这里作系动词，表示“保持不变”、“仍然”（后面可跟形容词、名词、动名词等）：
Why did you remain silent/quiet at the dinner party?
你在宴会上为何一言不发？
(2)to burn down 烧为平地
pull down 摧毁
