The "21st century. com" has begun. What new technology this new century will see is everybody's guess. For one thing, the computer technology has come with the Internet which will transform the way we work and our social lives in the coming decades. No doubt, the future is now. There is no going back.

Generally speaking, modern technology has made the world a better living place. The benefits overweigh the disadvantages. While many would agree that computers have made life easier and more convenient, only a few would say something to the contrary. The invention of the Internet, in particular, has connected people at every corner on the planet and beyond, as never before, without limits. More for good than for bad, the main means of communication is by the Internet and its by-device, the mobile phones. To begin with, "telecommuting" may soon be a more common way of working, as more people are doing part of their jobs from home, using computer technology. Facebook is a popular social club worldwide. Increasingly, the way we work and our social lives are electronically related with the products of E-age. E-mail. E-book. E-bank. E-class. And E-folks chat, blog and twitter at will. Such are, in part, the powers of the Internet.

From another point of view, the WWW and all that implies are not without negative effects on our civilization. Sometimes, computers are regarded as complex and stressfull, especially to an older generation belonging to the age of B.C. (before computers). Gradually, we are changing face-to-face communication to a computer screen. Furthermore, there seems dangers for a society which depends on computer screens rather than face-to-face contact. Human beings are both intelligent and emotional. The Internet is intelligent, of course. But it cannot decide as we do. And it has no emotion. And that makes no small a difference because emotion matters to us as human beings. We are not able to get emotion out of the Internet. Never.

It may be too early to calculate how far modern technology would influence out civilization. The Internet, the civilization's new-born kid, is all right. However, we are trapped in a new way of communication which connects people seemingly so near and yet so far away. Likewise, there seems a strange feeling about history. Looking back in the past only three decades ago, we feel like going to the Iron Age. A mere century ago, it is as if returning to the Stone Age. The Internet marks a point of departure for a brave new age. That was then. And this is now.
