“You are what you eat.”“你吃什么就成为什么样子。”营养专家经常使用这句话来倡导更好的饮食习惯。的确，入口的东西确实成为我们的一部分。但我们也可以从另一个角度来看这句话，我们所吃的反映出我们自己－－不论就人或文化而言。

你想了解另一种文化吗？那么你应该去认识他们的食物。下面这篇文章，带我们认识美国食物。

What is “American food”? At first you might think the answer is easy as pie. To many people, American food means hamburgers, hot dogs, fried chicken and pizza. If you have a “sweet tooth”, you might even think of apple pie or chocolate chip cookies. It's true that Americans do eat those things. But are those the only kind of vittles（食物） you can find in America?

何谓“美式食物”？乍听之下你可能认为答案容易得很。对许多人而言，美式食物就是汉堡、热狗、炸鸡和披萨。如果你是好吃甜食的人，你可能会想到苹果派或巧克力片饼干。美国人确实吃这些东西，但这些就是你在美国唯一找得到的食物吗？

Except for Thanksgiving turkey（感恩节火鸡）, it's hard to find a typically（典型的） “American” food. The United States is a land of immigrants（移民）. So Americans eat food from many different countries. When people move to America, they bring their cooking styles with them. That's why you can find almost every kind of ethnic（种族的、民族的） food in America. In some cases, Americans have adopted（外来的） foods from other countries as favorites. Americans love Italian pizza, Mexican tacos and Chinese egg rolls. But the American version（版本） doesn't taste quite like the original（最初的）!

除了感恩节火鸡以外，挺难找到典型的美国食物。美国是个移民之地，所以美国人吃的食物来自许多不同的国家，当人们移居美国，他们也将自己的烹调带了进来。那也就是为什么在美国你几乎可以看到所有不同民族的食物。在某些情况中，美国人把外国的食物视为最爱。美国人喜爱意大利的披萨，墨西哥的玉米饼和中国的春卷，但是这些东西的美国版味道却不很道地！

1．pie

pie是一种甜食，大家都吃过。它的制作方法简单，吃起来就更简单，所以easy as pie就有“非常简单”“不费吹灰之力”的意思。来看两个例子：

The job was easy as pie, and we finished up an hour early.
这项活对我们来说是小菜一碟，我们早在一小时前就完成了。
You want Mom to give you fifty dollars? Easy as pie. Just tell her you need to buy some new shoes.
你想叫妈妈给你五十美元，这容易，你只要告诉她你要买新鞋子。

有一个意思差不多的习语是a piece of cake，小菜一碟。比如：
We need not have worried about the math exam. It was a piece of cake.
我们本不必担心数学考试,实际上很容易。

2．turkey

大写的Turkey意思是“土耳其”，小写则指“火鸡”。如：
Mother roasted a turkey for dinner.
妈妈烤了火鸡当晚餐。

在口语中，turkey指那些失败的人或事，如：
The motion picture is a real turkey.
这部电影真糟。
My brother-in-law thinks he knows everything but he's a real turkey.
我姐夫以为他什么都懂,实际上他真是个白痴。

do的强调法

先回忆一下文中的句子：
It's true that Americans do eat those things.

这里，谓语动词eat就用do表示了强调的意思，可以理解为美国人“确实”吃这些东西。

此外，do（does, did）还可以根据需要翻译成“务必”、“一定”、“真的”、“确实”等意思。来看几个例子吧！

I did think you were the best student in our class.
我当时的确认为你是我们班最好的学生。

He does like to eat noodles.
他真的非常喜欢吃面条。

Do write to me when you get there．
你到那儿后务必给我来信。

需要注意的是，第三个例子是祈使句，可大家不要误解，以为在祈使句前面加上do，表达一种“命令”的语意。其实，这里的do表示的是强意的请求，有时可以使邀请的口气更热情、客气和友好。

比如，一个人学会了煮咖啡，就请朋友们来尝尝自己的手艺，人家刚放下杯子，她就急着劝人家说：
Do have another cup of coffee.
请再喝怀咖啡。
