极地风光让人惊叹

“半夜的太阳”——极昼现象和北极光，都是特有的自然现象。让我们一起走进神秘的北极圈，去探访那迷人的景色吧！

Midnight sun is a state of mind. Time makes no sense in this world. You can leave your watch in your suitcase.

夜半阳光是一种心境。在这里，时间毫无意义。你可以把手表留在手提箱里了。

The children will roller-skate（溜旱冰） down the streets in the middle of the night ---- with sun in their faces. Small motorboats（汽艇） chug（发出轧轧声前进） out of the harbor（海港）. Groups of people sit on the rocks here and there, enjoying the never-ending sunlight.

孩子们会半夜出来溜冰——阳光洒在他们脸上，小型摩托艇轧轧叫着驶出港湾。人们成群结队散坐在岩石上，享受这永远不会消失的阳光。

The northern lights（北极光） are no less impressive（给人深刻印象的）. White, yellow, green and red, they sweep（扫清） across the dark sky in a state of eternal（永恒的）, rapid（迅速地） flux. Northern lights appear all year round in Greenland, but they can only be observed（看到） against a clear, dark night sky. They appear at a height（高度） of about 100 kilometers (65 miles) and have the shape of a flapping curtain（窗帘） or points radiating（放射） from a single dot（点）.

北极光也不逊色。白黄绿红，这些颜色从空中横扫而过，不停地快速变化着。格陵兰附近一年四季都有北极光，可只有在晴朗的黑色天幕衬托下，我们才能一睹它的风采。在100公里以外，它们看来就像飘动的帘子或是放出光芒的小点点。

【世博读书笔记】

1．flux有“流出；涨潮；变迁”的意思，但常用的说法是a state of flux，表示“变迁”、“不断的变化”等。加上一些修饰成分，就可以表示“……的变迁”，如：
Most businesses are in a constant state of flux, so the finance function must be flexible enough to deal with environmental factors quickly.
大多数企业都处在持续不断地变化之中，因此财务上必须足够灵活以应付环境的迅速变化。

All is in a state of flux.
所有一切都在变化之中。

2．height是名词，意思是“高度”，主要有以下一些用法：

（1）表示身高，如：
State your age, height, and weight.
填上你的年龄，身高和体重。
如果两个人一般高，就可以用be the same/right height来讲，如：
My daughter is already about the same height as I am.
我女儿都快和我一般高了。

（2）惯用语be at the height of your success/fame/powers etc.指的是“一个人最成功/著名/有威望的时候”，也就是“跨入了人生的巅峰”，如：
The Beatles were at the height of their fame.

三合一惯用语，由名词＋名词、动词＋动词、形容词＋形容词以及副词＋副词合组而成。两个词之间用“ and”或“or”。

1．名词+名词

（1）do's and dont's （应注意的事项）
Try to be familiar with the do's and dont's of an organization.
要尽力熟悉一个组织的行事规则。

（2）law and order（法律秩序；法纪）
The police's job is to maintain law and order of a country.
警察的职责就是维持国家法纪。

2．动词+动词

（1）forgive and forget（宽恕他人）
Let's learn to forgive and forget and let bygones be bygones.
让我们学会宽恕他人，让过去的成为过去吧！

（2）pick and choose（细心选择；挑剔）
Susan picked and chose her dresses, but did not buy any.
Susan在裙子堆里挑三拣四，却一件也没买。

3．形容词+形容词

（1）fair and square（公平地）
All are advised to play fair and square.
我们都认同公平竞争。

（2）safe and sound（安全地）
The fishermen managed to escape the storm and returned home safe and sound.
渔夫试图避开风暴，安全到家。

4．副词+副词

（1）first and foremost（首先）
There are many ways of keeping fit. First and foremost, one must live a proper life.
许多方法可以保持形体，但首先，一个人必须有适合自己的生活方式。

（2）here and there（到处）
Once you go out, you can see cars here and there.
一旦你出去，就会看到到处都是车。
