相爱的规律

你可曾认识一对看上去很不般配、可其婚姻却十分幸福的夫妇?其中的原因让你百思不得其解。到底是什么神秘力量使我们投入到某个人的怀抱？

When we're little, our mother is the center of our attention, and we are the center of hers. So our mother's characteristics（特性） leave an indelible（难以磨灭的） impression. We are forever attracted to people with her facial features（面部特征）, body type, and personality, even sense of humor.

小时候，母亲是我们生活的中心，而我们也是她生活的中心。于是母亲的特点给我们留下了无法抹去的影响。我们永远被与她的脸部特征、身材、个性乃至幽默感相似的人所吸引。

While the mother determines（决定） in large part what qualities（品质） attract us in a mate, it's the father -- the first male in our lives -- who influences（影响） how we relate to the opposite sex（异性）. Fathers have an enormous（巨大的） effect on their children's personalities（品格） and chances of marital happiness.（婚姻幸福）

虽然母亲大体上决定我们挑选什么样的配偶，可是父亲——我们生活中的第一个男人——也影响了我们如何与异性交往。父亲对孩子们的个性及婚姻幸福的可能性具有巨大影响。

Just as mothers influence their son's general feelings toward women, fathers influence their daughter's general feelings about men. If a father lavishes（慷慨地给予） praise on his daughter and demonstrates（证明） that she is a worthwhile（有价值的） person, she'll feel very good about herself in relation to men. But if the father is cold, critical or absent, the daughter will tend to feel she's not very lovable（讨人喜爱的） or attractive.

正如母亲影响儿子对女人的总体看法，父亲影响女儿对男人的态度。如果父亲对女儿大加赞扬，并表示她是一个可爱的人，她将会在与男人交往时自我感觉良好。但如果父亲是一个冷漠、喜欢挑剔或者心不在焉的人，女儿会感到自己不太可爱或者缺乏魅力。

1．little是形容词，有以下用法。

（1）指外形上的“小”，如：
a little house一座小房子
their little group of supporters他们那一小帮支持者

（2）带有感情的“小”，可以是“小巧可爱的”，也可能指“卑微的”，如：
The little dog followed the boy everywhere.
那条小狗到处都跟着那男孩。
He’s a boring little man.
他是个无聊的小男人。

2．influence

（1）做名词，意思是“影响”，如：
She used her influence with the chairman to get me the job.
她使用对董事长的影响力为我找到了工作。

（2）做动词，常用influence sb. to do sth.表达法，如：
What influenced you to take the job?
是什么促使你去争取那份工作的？

辨析介词to和toward(s)

这两个词在很多时候都是可以替换的，可他们的意思并非完全一样，就请大家通过几个例子体会一下他们的区别。

The Great Green Wall will stop the sand from moving towards the rich farmland in the south.
绿色长城将阻止沙子移向南方肥沃的农田。
They came to this place two days ago.
他们两天前来到了这个地方。

小结：在表示“向、往”时，toward(s)仅有“向着某个方向”之意，实际上并没有到达；而to一般接在come、go、move、return等动词后面，有到达的意思。

The windows of our room open towards the south.
我们房间的窗户朝南开。
Shenyang is to the northeast of China.
沈阳位于中国的东北。

小结：toward(s)用来表示静态物朝着某个方向，而to用来表示静态物位于某个方向。
