In so many ways, cyberspace mirrors（反映） the real world. People ask for information, play games, and share hobby tips. Others buy and sell products. Still others look for friendship, or even love.

在许多方面网络空间反映了真实世界。们找寻资料、玩游戏及分享兴趣嗜好的秘方。其他人买卖东西。更有人在找寻友谊，甚至爱情。

Unlike the real world, however, your knowledge about a person is limited to words on a computer screen. Identity（身份） and appearance（外表） mean very little in cyberspace. Rather, a person’s thoughts-or at least the thoughts they type-are what really count. So even the shyest person can become a chat-room star.

但是不同于真实世界的是，你对一个人的认知只限于电脑荧幕上的文字。身份及外表在网络空间里没有太大的意义。反而，一个人的思想——或至少他们在荧幕上所打出来的思想-才是真正重要的。所以即使一位最害羞的人也可以成为聊天室里的热门人物。

Usually, this “faceless” communication（交流） doesn’t create problems. Identity doesn’t really matter when you’re in a chat room discussing politics（政治） or hobbies（嗜好）. In fact, this emphasis on the ideas themselves makes the Internet a great place for exciting conversation（谈话）. Where else can so many people come together to chat.

通常这种看不到对方面孔的沟通并不会产生问题。当你在聊天室讨论政治或嗜好时，身份并不那么重要。事实上，这种对意见本身的强调让互联网络成为一个精彩有趣的谈话场所。世界上还有哪些地方可以让这么多人一起闲聊他们的兴趣？

But some Internet users want more than just someone to chat with. They’re looking for serious love relationships. Is cyberspace a good place to find love? That answer depends on whom you ask. Some of these relationships actually succeed. Others fail miserably（痛苦地）.

但是有些互联网络使用者想要的并不只是聊天的对象。他们在找寻认真的恋爱关系。网络空间是一个寻找爱情的好地方吗？那要看你问谁。这类恋情有些真的成功，有些则悲惨地结束。

【世博读书笔记】

1．count短语

（1）短语count out，字面上看是“数出来”，就可以理解为“没有算进去”，比如：
Please count me out from tomorrow's basketball match.
明天的篮球比赛请不要把我算在内。

（2）短语count in就是“把……也算上”，如：
If you're going for a picnic this weekend, count me in.
如果这个周末你们去野餐,把我也算上。

（3）count作为不及物动词，意思是“有意义，有重要价值”，所以短语count on sb就可以理解为“把这种价值放在某人身上”，也就是我们“信任”他，“指望”他，如：
You can count on him to help.
你可以指望他帮忙。

2．matter作为动词，是“有关系、要紧”的意思，在口语中，使用频率较高，主要用法如下。

（1）It doesn’t matter.
如果别人做了某些损害你利益的事，而你又不想追究，就可以说这句话。如：
I’ve spilled some coffee on the carpet.
我把咖啡洒倒地毯上了。
It doesn’t matter.
没关系。

如果你不介意选择二者之中的哪一个，也可以这么说。如：
Red or white wine?
红的还是白葡萄酒？
Oh, either. It doesn’t matter.
都行，无所谓。

（2）what does it matter
可以理解为“没什么了不起”，如：
What does it matter if he drinks a little, at least he’s happy.
喝点酒算什么，至少他很开心。

【世博句型留言板】

depend on
意思是“取决于……，视……而定”。如：

The time of departure depends on the weather.
出发时间视天气而定.。

Whether he will go depends on your decision.
他是否去那儿取决于你的决定。

*额外收获：
Depend on the situation翻译过来就是“看情况”，但是在口语中，人们通常使用省略用法说It depends.有时，为了加强语气，还在中间加入all。比如，快要放假了，同事之间可能就会出现这样的对话：
Hi，Mike．Where will you go for a journey on National Day？
嗨，迈克。国庆节你打算去哪旅行？
It all depends．Anyway I'm not sure how many days off we'll have．
那要视情况而定。不管怎样我还不确定我们能放几天假呢。
