Lesson 49 The end of a dream

1. Tired of sleeping on the floor, a young man in Teheran saved up for years to buy a real bed.

As he was tired of…。

I want to get married in one or two years, so I'm trying to save(some money)up.

(3)to在这里用于表示目的,相当于in order to:
I got up early to have a swim.

2. For the first time in his life, he became the proud owner of a bed which had springs and a mattress.

(Ode to the West Wind written byPercy Bysshe Shelley)中的诗句:, If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind?(冬天来了,春天还远吗?)

Mattress n. 床垫

3. Because the weather was very hot, he carried the bed on to the roof of his house.

I put the pen onto/ on the table.
The pen is on the table.
(不可用onto/ on to)

Mr. Thompson jumped onto the stage.
Mr. Thompson jumped on the stage.

4. He slept very well for the first two nights, but on the third night, a storm blew up.

Blow up
The plane blew up in midair.
Stop at the gas station and we’ll blow up the tyres.
Jane’s blowing up the balloon.
how much would it cost to have this photo blown up?
It looks as though there’s a storm blowing up.
Jenny’s father blew up when she didn’t come home last night.

5. A gust of wind swept the bed off the roof and sent it crashing into the courtyard below.

A gust(of wind) blew my hat off.
She set off even though the wind was blowing in gusts.

sweep vt.
She sweeps the floor/ the room every morning.
The room is swept clean.

A gust of wind swept the bed off the roof.
The newspaper has been swept away by the wind.

crashing into the courtyard below是现在分词短语,作宾语补足语。

Crash v.
The plane crashed shortly after take-off.
My computer crashed yesterday, so I haven’t been able to do anything.
The stock market crashed this morning.

6. The young man did not wake up until the bed had struck the ground.

Until

I'll stay here until Monday.
I won't leave until Monday.
I won’t be here until tomorrow.

7. Although the bed was smashed to pieces, the man was miraculously unhurt.

Piece是“一张、一片”的意思,比如“a piece of paper”(一张纸)。

smash v. 砸,粉碎, 经常与up, into/to pieces 连用:

The plate dripped on the floor and smashed into little pieces.
He had an accident and smashed up his car.

8. When he woke up, he was still on the mattress.

9. Glancing at the bits of wood and metal that lay around him, the man sadly picked up the mattress and carried it into his house.

①lie作“躺,卧、处于(位置)”解 时,过去式为:lay,过去分词为:lain;
②lie作“撒谎”解时,过去式为:lied,过去分词为:lied;

After he glanced at…

John glanced at his watch and left the room.
Joe glanced through the newspaper while talking to me.

(3)that引导的关系从句修饰the bits of wood and metal, that在从句中作主语。

10. After he had put it on the floor, he promptly went to sleep again.

be tired of doing sth.
A gust of wind
Smash to pieces
Lie around
