Lesson 58 A blessing in disguise? 是因祸得福吗? (1) blessing n. 福分,福气 bless v. 祝福,保佑 May God bless you! Bless you! 看见某人打喷嚏时用 (2) in disguise伪装 be disguised as … 伪装成… She arrived at his home disguised as a man. disguise yourself as … 把自己伪装成… To get into the building, I'll disguise myself as a reporter. 1. The tiny village of Frinley is said to possess a ‘cursed tree’. 据说弗林利这个小村里有一棵“被诅咒的树”。 (1) 主语+ be said+…这种结构通常译为“据说……”,是对不太 有把握的事发表看法时一种谨慎的说法。 (2) curse sb/sth for (doing) sth: I cursed myself for not buying the reference book. 2. Because the tree was mentioned in a newspaper, the number of visitors to Frinley has now increased. 就因为报上提到过这棵树,所以现在来弗林利参观的人越来越多。 (1) the number of表示“……的数量/总数”,它作主语时谓语动词要用单数,虽然visitors是复数。注意它与a number of(许多,若干)的区别: The number of patients in this hospital has increased. 这家医院的病人越来越多。 A number of patients have asked to see you. 许多病人要求见您。(动词用复数形式) (2) Increase & Grow a) increase (vt./vi) (在规模、数量和程度上)增加、增长: The number of tourists has increased greatly in recent years. The driver increased speed. b) grow (vi.) (动植物) 成长、生长;在表示数量上增长时可以代替increase: She has grown so much she is nearly as tall as I am. My hair has grown too long --- I must get it cut. The population of this town has increased / grown. 这个镇的人口已经增长了。 3. The tree was planted near the church fifty years ago, but it is only in recent years that it has gained an evil reputation. 该树是50年前栽在教堂附近的,但只是近几年才得到了一个坏名声。 (1)It is / was … that / who … 强调句法 该句型用以强调主语、宾语、和状语。Who只能用于修饰人,而that适用于一切,也包括人。在强调地点或时间状语时,也不能用where 或 when。 John visited New York last month. a) 强调主语: It was John who / that visited New York last month. 上个月去纽约的是约翰 b) 强调宾语: It was New York that John visited last month. 约翰上个月去的是纽约。 C)强调时间状语: It was last month that John visited New York. 约翰是上个月去的纽约。 (2)Gain & Earn a) gain 获得,得到 (一般用于比较抽象的事物),但不能用于钱 The new teacher quickly gained experience. He soon gained strength again after his illness. b) earn (用劳动)挣得,谋生,博得 He earns $50 a week. He earns his living by playing the piano. My quick action earned me his praise. 我行动迅速,博得了他的赞扬。 4. It is said that if anyone touches the tree, he will have bad luck; if he picks a leaf, he will die. 据说,谁要是触摸了这棵树,谁就会交上恶运;如果谁摘了一片树叶,谁就会死去。 5. Many villagers believe that the tree has already claimed a number of victims. 很多村民相信此树已经害了不少人。 claim可以表示疾病、意外等“夺去(生命)”: The accident claimed a few lives. 那次事故夺走了几条人命。 6. The vicar has been asked to have the tree cut down, but so far he has refused. 人们曾请求教区的牧师叫人把树砍掉,但他直到现在也没有同意。 (1)在 to have the tree cut down这个短语中, have表示“使……”,即叫别人完成某动作,cut down为过去分词短语。(cf.第66课语法) (2)so far为固定短语,其含义之一为“迄今为止”,常与现在完成时连用: He hasn't returned my books so far. 迄今为止他还没有还我的书。 7. He has pointed out that the tree is a useful source of income, as tourists have been coming from all parts of the country to see it. 他指出,由于人们从全国各地纷纷前来参观这棵树,它成了一个有用的财源。 (1) point out,指出。 这个短语可分开用: I realized that he had made a mistake, so I pointed it out to him immediately。 我意识到他犯了个错误,所以我立即就向他指了出来。 He pointed out that it was a mistake not to help them. 他指出不帮助他们是错误的。 (2) pick & cut pick是指不凭借任何工具而是徒手使植物的某部分折断,表示 “摘、采集”: She has picked a lot of flowers. cut 是指用锋利的工具(如刀、剪刀)在物体上制造一个开口或使物体分开,表示 “砍、切开、雕刻”: She cut the apple into two. 8. In spite of all that has been said, the tourists have been picking leaves and cutting their names on the tree-trunk. 尽管有上述种种说法,但游客们还是照常摘树叶和把他们的名字刻在树干上。 in spite of,尽管,虽然;不顾,不管。 He set off in spite of the heavy rain. 尽管下着大雨,他还是出发了。 In spite of what you have told me, I still believe(that) he has stolen the money. 虽然你对我说了这些,我还是认为他偷了那笔钱。 9. So far, not one of them has been struck down by sudden death ! 然而到目前为止,还没有一个人暴死呢!
