Lesson 65 Jumbo versus the police 小象对警察

versus表示竞赛等中“……对……”：
Have you watched the game last night? It was France versus Italy.
昨天晚上的比赛你看了吗？是法国队对意大利队。

1. Last Christmas, the circus owner, Jimmy Gates, decided to take some presents to a children's hospital.
去年圣诞节，马戏团老板吉米·盖茨决定送些礼物给儿童医院。

2. Dressed up as Father Christmas and accompanied by a‘guard of honour’of six pretty girls, he set off down the main street of the city riding a baby elephant called Jumbo.
他打扮成圣诞老人，在由6个漂亮姑娘组成的“仪仗队”的陪同下，骑上一头名叫江伯的 小象，沿着城里的主要街道出发了。

过去分词短语 dressed up…和 accompanied by作状语，说明伴随状态。

(1) dress us (as) 装扮成，化妆成
She dressed up as a ghost. 她装扮成一个幽灵。

(2) accompany (vt.)的主要含义是“陪伴”、“陪同”：
Jane accompanied her mother to the theatre last night.
昨天晚上，简陪她母亲去看戏了。
When I saw her yesterday, she was accompanied by her boyfriend.
昨天我见到她时，她正由她的男朋友陪着。

(3) guard of honour指“仪仗队”， guard可表示“（一队）警卫队”、“（一队）卫兵／哨兵”等。of six pretty girls中的 of表示“由……组成的”：
A group of six Chinese boys took part in the competition.
一个由6名中国男孩组成的小组参加了这次竞赛。

(4) down在这里是介词，表示“沿”、“顺”、“循”的意思：
Just walk down the street and you'll see the post office.
一直沿着这条街走，你就会看到邮局。

(5) baby可作形容词，表示“幼小的”、“小的”、“小型的”等含义：
She likes to watch baby dogs.
她喜欢观看小狗。

3. He should have known that the police would never allow this sort of thing.
他本该知道警察绝不会允许这类事情发生。

He should have known, 他本应知道。这里“should +have +过去分词”表示本应发生但实际上并未发生的事情。
4. A policeman approached Jimmy and told him he ought to have gone along a side street as Jumbo was holding up the traffic.
一个警察走过来告诉吉米，他应该走一条小路，因为江伯阻碍了交通。

(1) he ought to have gone along a side street, 他本应该走一条小路。 ought是助动词，“ought + have +过去分词”表示过去该做而没有做的事情。

(2) hold up 为固定短语，其含义之一为“阻止”、“使停顿”、“延误”、“阻碍”：
If you park the car in the street, it'll hold up the traffic.
如果你把车停在街上，它将会阻碍交通。

5. Though Jimmy agreed to go at once, Jumbo refused to move.
虽然吉米同意马上就走，但江伯却拒绝移动。

agree to do sth
agree with sb.

6. Fifteen policemen had to push very hard to get him off the main street.
15个警察不得不用很大的力气把它推离主要街道。

7. The police had a difficult time, but they were most amused.
警察虽然吃了苦头，但他们还是感到很有趣。

8. ‘Jumbo must weigh a few tons,’ said a policemen afterwards, ‘so it was fortunate that we didn't have to carry him. Of course, we should arrest him, but as he has a good record, we shall let him off this time.’
“江伯一定有好几吨重，”一个警察事后这样说，“值得庆幸的是它没让我们抬它走。当然，我们应该逮捕它，但由于它一贯表现很好，这次我们饶了它。”

he has a good record, 它表现一贯很好，这里的record是指警察局的档案。

let…off 表示“放过”、“饶过”、“对……从轻处理”：
If you promise not to do it again, I’ll let you off.
