第八十课 The Crystal Palace 水晶宫

一、摘要写作

1、摘要练习

分别使用快速阅读法、听写法和合并法练习写摘要。

将合并句子写的摘要贴到会员社区。自己根据课文内容，将可以合并的句子合并，去掉一些细节，篇幅争取控制在50字到60字。

2、继续做两句话概括的练习。

用两句概括，请大家自己做。

从第三十一课开始，我不再提供摘要练习的答案。请大家认真做好摘要练习，这是提高表达能力，进而提高写作能力，特别是围绕中心进行写作的好方法。希望大家坚持，我会在会员社区帮大家修改摘要，并且适当做一些讲评，选出比较好的摘要供大家参考。

二、本课重点：文章衔接的手段[6]

我们先看课文里的这两个句子：
1. There was also a great deal of machinery on display. The most wonderful piece of machinery on show was Nasmyth’s steam hammer.
这两个句子结合比较紧密，至少使用两个衔接的手段。首先看看这两个短语：on display, on show，他们的意思差不多，完全可以互相替代，但为什么前后用不同的说法呢？主要是为了避免重复，同时又能表达相同或者相近的意思。这也是一种衔接的手段。今天我们主要来看另一种手法，就是比较的手法。第一句里说a great deal of machinery，而第二句里说the most wonderful piece of machinery,用了最高级，指前面提到过的machinery中最好的一件，前后两句通过比较得到了连接。继续看下面的例子。
2. His lectures were a teat for the students. Daily examples were used to explain the paintings. What was more interesting was that he taught them how to dance in class in order to understand those artists.
3. Tom is a good student. Jack is a better one, but Jerry is the best.

三、值得学习的句子

1. Though in those days, traveling was not as easy as it is today, steam boats carried thousands of visitors across the Channel from Europe.
Smoking was not as popular as it is today among young people.

2. On arriving in England, they were taken to the Crystal Palace by train.
When they arrived in England, they were taken to the Crystal Palace by train.
On seeing the man again, she burst into tears.

3. It remained one of the most famous buildings in the world.
It remains a problem for the couple.
