第八十二课 Monster or fish? 是妖还是鱼？

1.Fishermen and sailors sometimes claim to have seen monsters in the sea. 渔夫和水手们有时声称看见过海里的妖怪。
claim :
(1)vt. or vi.（对……）提出要求，认领，索取：
He claims ownership of the house .她对房子的产权提出要求。
(2)vt. 声称，断言：
He claims knowledge of the event.他自称知道这个事件.

2.Though people have often laughed at stories told by seamen, it is now known that many of these ‘monsters’ which have at times been sighted are simply strange fish.
这个长句子可以改写成下面一些短句。
Seamen told some stories.
People have often laughed at those stories.
Monsters have at times been sighted by seamen.
These monsters are simply strange fish.
We all know this know.

(1)此句中which have...引导的是限定性定语从句，先行词为‘monsters’.
(2)at times 有时，间或。例如:
He picks me up at the school gate at times.
他有时开车在校门口接我。
(3)fish鱼一般情况都使原形，除非涉及到具体种类。例如：
We caught several fish.我们捉到几条鱼。（原形）
I like fishes and crabs best.我最喜欢鱼和螃蟹。

3.unusual creatures are washed to the shore, but they are rarely caught out at sea.
(1)wash本意是冲刷，洗
Wash hands before each meal.
(2)wash up意思是洗碗，所以后面就不要再接dishes，但是可以说wash the dishes.
(3)out at sea短语意为在远海。

4.Realizing that this was no ordinary fish, the fisherman made every effort not to damage it in any way.
(1)句中this was no ordinary fish,这根本不是一条普通的鱼。
no的否定意味比not（a/an）要重（用于名词或形容词之前、系动词be之后）
例如：She is no fool.她可不是傻子。
(2)make effort to 努力做
例如：I will make every effort to finish it on time .我将尽一切努力准时完成。

5. Such creatures have rarely been seen alive by man as they live at a depth of six hundred feet.
人们很少能看到活着的这类动物。
(1)creature指包含人在内的“生物”、“动物”。指人时它可以表示怜爱等感情，多用于指女性。
例如：What a lovely creature.
多么美丽的女人啊。
(2)at a depth of...在多深的水下
at a speed of...以多大的速度
