这里的to excess是一个习语，means to an extreme degree, 指过分，无度的意思。例如：He drinks to excess. 他酗酒无度。

excess means going beyond the normal or accepted limits, immoderation, 指过头，无节制的意思。例如：Don’t carry your anger to excess. 不要肝火过盛。

Excess作为形容词指额外的，附加的意思。我们常说的补票费，就是excess fare.再如：A company which makes high profits must pay excess profits duty to the government. 赢利高的公司须向政府交纳额外利得税。

这句话，其实告诉我们的是把握限度的重要性。我们常说的物极必反也就是这个道理。
