谁都知道story是“故事”，但我们看一下story的英语定义：an account of events, real or imagined. 就会发觉real和imagined已表示了story的两种颇不一样的含义。An account of imagined events 是对虚构的事件的陈述，这可对译为“故事、传闻”甚至是“谎言”。而an account of real events 是对真实事件的陈述，那就是“实情、经历、经过”等了。请看以下名例的不同含义：

The child cooked up a story to explain his absence from class.
编造一个谎言

Various stories are told about the old lady.
各种各样的传闻

Please tell us the story of your narrow escape from the earthquake.
死里逃生的经历
