TOEFL Sample Essay: Global Culture
by Mr. Jeenn Lee Hsieh for www.360abc.com TOEFL Topic Test of Written English Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Modern technology is creating a single world culture. Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion. Example writing: Modern technology is moving cultures beyond borders. The result should not exactly be a single world culture, however. In all likelihood, there would be a global culture diversified in various cultures, old and new, far and wide. The times have changed. Goods move. People move. Ideas move. And cultures mix on a global scale, but they are farm from uniform. Mainstream cultures may transform each other to a certain extent. Not that cultures agree with each other; but that they can understand each other. Cultures of more developed countries reach virtually everyone, thanks to television, radio and the Internet. The rapid disappearance of remote cultures is part of a larger trend. The phenomenon is nothing new. Human societies have always mixed and changed. The technology-based culture is of course gaining the ground around the world. This is particularly true of pop music, fashions, dancing, and even drinks and foods. But no example is more dramatic than languages. The English language is a case in point about a global culture. Now spoken by more than one-fifth of the world, English is essential element of the new global culture in diversity. But will electronics that move cultures so fast and pervasively kill any other language like Spanish or Chinese? Certainly not. Nor will beliefs and rituals, habits and customs, rules and laws, be possibly be made into a single world culture. Culture is the sum total of who and what peoples are. Linked by jets, e-mails, cell phones and so on, different peoples with different cultures are all in each other's backyard. Such kind of change is more a reality than a choice. It is a shifting mixture of experimentation and innovation in which more and less developed societies learn and benefit from one another. The change, although technologically possible, must be morally and religiously acceptable. In the end, the cultures that survive will be those willingly and able to embrace the new on their own terms, while rejecting anything that implies the total violation of their way of life.
