第58讲 因为你，我在世界之巅 Lay a finger on someone & On top of the world

侄儿虽然很瘦弱，面对大个子也敢冒一句“你要是动我一根汗毛，我就…”。他那扯高气昂、气势汹汹的样子让我想起英文中的一个片语：lay a finger on someone.

My nephew often speaks to other kids:“ If you lay a finger on me, you’ll be in serious trouble.”
(译文：我侄儿常对其他小孩说：“如果你敢动我一根汗毛，你的麻烦就大了”。)

从字面上看，lay a finger on someone的意思是“放一个手指在某人身上”，这不正意味着“欺负某人”的意思吗？人们常翻译为“动某人一根汗毛”，这更强化了“欺负”的含义。注意，一般来讲这个片语常用在否定句中。To lay a finger on someone means to touch someone with the intention of hurting them. 如：

Don’t you dare lay a finger on me! Otherwise, I’ll call my teacher and parents.
(译文：你别想动我一根汗毛，如果你这样做，我将告诉老师和父母。)

侄儿的出生，让他的父母感到很高兴。他们逢人便夸自己的儿子是多么的聪明活泼，骄傲之情溢于言表。这里我们可以用“on top of the world”来表示他们的那股高兴劲，看看下面这个句子是怎样说的：

His parents were on top of the world because of his being born.
（译文：当他出生时，他的父母简直高兴疯了。）

top of the word本来的意思是指“世界之巅”，从字面上理解，当人们站在世界之巅，一切尽在掌握之中，就甭提有多快乐了，所以常把这个片语译为“感觉到很高兴，很快乐，高兴疯了”，而不直译为“在世界之巅”。If you tell other people that you are on top of the world, it means that you are feeling extremely happy. 如果你想给你的女友写封情书，下面这个句子也许派得上用场：With you, I’m on top of the world. 虽然有点滑腻，但或许女生就是喜欢呢！再看一个例子：

When Cindy agreed to marry Richard, he was on top of the world.
（译文：当Cindy同意与Richard结婚时，他高兴疯了。）

结束语：今天办公室的王主任介绍了一位女生给我认识。初次见面，她就告诉我说看到我很高兴（she is on top of the world）。我心想“这么陡！有点夸张吧！一定是情场老手了。”正想着，突然听到一句“不过我要求在我们恋爱期间，你不能动我一根汗毛（lay a finger on me）”我烤！你太直了吧！你以为你是谁？我逃！
