floor

floor这个多义词有十多种解释，但只要记住了它的基本意义，其它意义也就不难理解。Floor的基本意义是“地板”，与ceiling相反。它常见的几个意义：sea floor/ ocean floor(海底)：the lowest limit of wages or prices (工资或物价的最低限额)；the place where official debates are held (议员席)；the area where people dance(舞池)。

后两个意义又构成词组take the floor。这词组有时要根据上下文来决定含义：

With the consent of the Chairman, George took the floor after two other speakers.
经主席的同意，乔治继两位讲者之后发言。

Everyone was surprised when he took the floor with Jenny.
当他和珍妮步入舞池时，人人都大吃一惊。

floor还有一个基本意义是“楼房的一层”(all the rooms on a particular level)：

My office is on the top floor.
我的办公室在顶楼。

而英国和美国表示层数习惯上有所不同：英国人说ground floor即美国人的first floor。英国人说first floor已是第二层了。
