第37讲 寻寻觅觅 Seek one’s fortune & On the flip side

如今，“跳槽”已成为现代都市生活的一道“美丽的风景线”，而大多“跳槽”者多是为了追寻更为成功的机会。在英文中“追求成功的机会”可以用片语来表示，首先还是来看下面的例句：

The purpose many people practice job-hopping is to seek their fortune in most times.
(译文：许多喜欢跳槽的人目的往往是为了寻找成功的机会。)

这里片语seek one’s fortune的意思是“寻找出路，追寻发展或成功的机会”。Fortune 原义指“财富、运气”。所以从字面上理解，追求(seek)财富，也就是在“找出路” 了。If you seek your fortune,  then you go to another place hoping to gain success and wealth. For example:

When Hans was 14 years old, he left home to seek his fortune. He moved to Copenhagen to try to begin a career as a singer or actor.
(译文：当汉斯14岁时，他离家追寻发展的机会。他来到哥本哈根，试着开始歌手或演员的生涯。)

现在越多越多的中国人选择“走遍美国”来寻找发展的机会(seek one’s fortune)。但反过来说(on the flip side)，对于许多美国人而言，他们却选择中国来了解这个文化浓厚的国度。在这句话中我们看到另一个片语on the flip side，它的意思是“反过来说”。如：

Sometimes in time-conscious societies, lateness is accepted. On the flip side, people in relaxed societies are gradually becoming more time-conscious.
(译文：有时在重视时间观念的社会，迟到也是可以接受的。反过来讲，在步调悠闲的社会，人们也渐渐变得较有时间观念。)

flip side本意是指唱片的背面，在人们的眼中，处于背面的东西也许就是较次之的东西，所以flip side后来就引申为事物较为不重要的一面。片语On the flip side却偏偏要强调(on)这个flip side，这不正好与人们一般的认识恰恰相反吗？所以我们一般译为“反过来讲，反过来说”。 If you say that something is on the flip side, then you explain it in a contrary way.如：

People who exercise are usually healthy. On the flip side, people who don’t exercise may have more health problems.
(译文：经常锻炼的人往往健康。反过来讲，那些不锻炼的人可能就有许多健康问题。)

结束语：今天我们学习了两个片语。一个是seek one’s fortune, 指“寻找出路，寻求发展的机会”。注意这个片语是非常书面化的用法，特别是在文学作品中经常出现。另一个是on the flip side, 意思是“反过来说，反过来讲”。
