第53讲　真心付出　Shell out & Hit the spot

现在的学费真是不敢想象。记得我们读书时，学费不是很贵，十六载寒窗生活累计花费也就一万元多一点，可是现在的小孩读个初中一年也要一万多。可以说，为了小孩的教育，做父母的不得不花费一大笔财富呀。

Nowadays, parents have to shell out a fortune for their children’s education.
(译文：现在，父母不得不为他们的小孩付出大笔的财富。)

在这个句子中我们看到一个片语shell out，它的意思是“付出”，尤指“付出金钱”。Shell作名词时指“贝壳、外壳”，贝壳在古时候曾作为货币流通工具而具有很高的价值；Shell也可以作动词, 指“剥去…的壳”，所以shell在片语中具有双重意思，既指“付出”，也指“金钱”，综合起来，片语shell out就是指“金钱的付出”。注意我们在使用这个片语时，作者常带有主观上的不愿意。If you shell out something, it means to pay a lot of money for something, especially unwillingly. For example:

If you want to buy the pair of shoes, you'll have to shell out at least $800.
(译文：如果你想立即修理，你必须要付出800美元。)

在学业上，父母总是尽量的满足他们孩子的要求，而他们全心的付出从来不要求回报，这正是其伟大之处。记得念书时，为了学好英语，父母就省吃俭用为我买了一个复读机。

In order to learn English well, my parents tightened their belt to buy a reread machine. It really hit the spot for me.
(译文：为了学好英语，父母省吃俭用为我买了一个复读机，它真的正合用处。)

在这个句子中，我们看到一个片语hit the spot，它的意思是“正合要求、恰到好处”。hit the spot多用在当人们正需要某物时，某物的出现使他们很享受，很痛快的情况下。To hit the spot means to have exactly the good effect that you wanted, especially when you are hungry or thirsty. For example:

After the football match, I drank a cup of cola beverage. It really hit the spot.
(译文：足球赛后，我喝了一杯可乐，真是痛快！)
