这句谚语最早见于乔质.赫伯特（George Herbert）所编的“格言集”（Outlandish Proverbs 1640）.

Wine, 我们都知道就是酒的意思，一般指葡萄酒。A glass of wine.一杯葡萄酒；the wines of Alsace阿尔萨斯葡萄酒；apple wine苹果酒。

Quench, to take away the force of (flames, desire, etc.) esp. With water扑灭；抑制（火焰、欲望等，尤指用水）。To quench one's thirst with a glass of water.以一杯水来解渴。

Thirst, the need to drink; desire for drink口渴；想喝水。还可以解释为渴望，Our people thirst for independence.我们的人民渴望独立。

这句谚语说明了这样一个道理：得到的东西往往会因为很多客观条件的限制而无法解决实际问题。
