common与ordinary

虽然common与ordinary这两个词有时可修饰同一个名词，如：a common man, the common people/an ordinary man, the ordinary people(常人，普通人)，但是在大多数情况下，它们不能互换使用。譬如，我们只说common goals，而不说ordinary goals来表示“共同的愿望”；只说common property，而不说ordinary property来表示“共同财产”。同样，我们只讲common knowledge，而不说ordinary knowledge。由此可见，其中是有词义区别、习惯用法及搭配等问题。

通常，common表示“共同的，共有的”或“常见的”：

The parents have the common desire that their son will attend university.
父母都希望儿子能上大学。

This sort of weather is quite common here in spring.
这种天气在这里春季时常遇见。

ordinary表示“平常的，普通的”，相当于normal, usual:

That was the most ordinary lunch.
那是一顿最平常的午餐。

In the ordinary way, he leaves home at eight.
一般情况下，他八点出门。
