defective与deficient

这两个形容词源于同一个拉丁语动词deficere，但在现代英语中，它们在词义上已有很大的区别。

Defective是“有缺点的，有缺陷的”(having a defect or defects)：deficient则是“缺乏的，不足的”(having a deficiency or deficiencies)。试比较以下例句：

The education she received was defective.
她所受的教育有缺陷。

She is deficient in education.
她所受的教育不足。

请再看两个例句：

You can return the TV set if it is defective in quality.

Her food is deficient in Vitamin C.

头一句指电视机有质量问题，可以退货，而后一句则表示食物中缺乏维生素C。这句可改写为There is not enough Vitamin C in her food.
