Born Sofia Scicolone, on Sept. 20, 1934, in Rome. An illegitimate（非法的、私生的） child of Romilda Villani and Riccardo Scicolone, she grew up in dire poverty（贫穷）, in the slums（贫民窟） of Pozzuoli. Her mother, a frustrated（失意的） actress, instilled starring（当明星） aspirations（热望、志向） in the skinny little Sofia.

9月20日出生于罗马Sofia Scicolone 的Sofia，是Romilda Villani和 Riccardo Scicolone的私生女，她从小在Pozzuoli的贫民窟长大。索菲亚的妈妈虽然是个失意的演员，但当明星的渴望依然不断影响着小索菲亚。

Sofia met producer and future husband Carlo Ponti while competing in a beauty contest（选美会）. Loren and Ponti, 24 years her senior, were married in 1957, following his Mexican divorce from his estranged wife（已分居但尚未离婚之妻）. Unfortunately the Italian law did not recognize the divorce（离婚） and charged（控告） them with bigamy（重婚罪）.

与它的同义词比较，terrible在程度上没有dire强烈，而dreadful和horrible更强调恐怖的、讨厌的事情，比如：
a dreadful movie
极糟糕的影片
The food at the hotel was horrible.
旅馆里的食物糟透了。

2．instill原意是“滴注”，这里是“逐渐灌输”的意思，常与in和into连用。例如：
A good teacher can instill the desire to learn in young people.
好的教师能将求知欲逐渐灌输给青年人。

特殊的比较级

并不是所有的形容词表示比较时都用than，英语中有几个以-or结尾源于拉丁语的形容词，由于其原级已具有比较的含义，在表示比较时不用than，而用to。本课的senior就属于这类形容词。

用senior来表达“年长”的意思，有两种方法。

第一种，be senior to(年长于)，例如：
Mary is two years senior to me, and her sister is junior to me by three years.
Mary比我大两岁，她妹妹比我小3岁。

第二种，be two/five/ten etc years sb’s senior比某人大2/5/10岁，例如：
原文中的24 years her senior意思就是，比她大24岁。
再来看一个例子：
Her husband was nine years her senior.
她丈夫比她大9岁。
